new canon s-60

I had and returned an S30. I found the door got out of the tracks quite easily. It inspired no confidence. I went with an S400 instead.

I played with Olympus door cameras and they are MUCH more rugged.
I guess I should reserve judgement, but I most of these 5MP cameras
have a lot more purple fringe than the 4MP models. So I would
prefer a 4MP model.
Great to see that they didn't jump on the crappy 6Mp bandwagon and
instead addressed the failings which have dogged the S-series from
the S30/40 onwards! - there never was a problem with the CCD in the
S50 - great to see that it finally has (or would seem to have) a
DECENT lens to replace that slow soft cornered coke bottle finally
:) .

I would have bought this camera if it had even 15 FPC movie mode.
Yes, I am very serious about photography. But I just love the
movie mode on my S230.

Whenever I want to take photographs only, I take my DSLR with me.
But when I go on family trips or to places where DSLR (or a large
video camera) is inappropriate, I want a quality digital camera
that can do things that other people's small digital cameras can
do. Why intentionally cut from 15 FPC on older Digic cameras to 10
FPC? Protecting the video camera market? I just see it as plain
disrespectful to loyal Canon customers.
The thing is that few other companies have engineering solutions equal to Canon. Their engineers are amazing, but marketing practices (artificially limiting the features, discriminating among the markets, etc.) destroy their reputation among photographers in my opinion.

My S30 has 15,800 pictures taken with it,and I can assure you,the lens door is excellent. It's tricky at first, but once you get a feel for it,it will never misalign,or come loose.

I've turned that S30 on and off enough times,to take all those pictures,so i really have put it to the test.

My newer S50 only has 2,462 pictures,so far,but the door actually seems more snug.
(maybe my S30 door has worn some)

:> )

Yeah,pretty bad.

I thought my newer S50 focused much faster, but thought it was just me...so i tried the S30 again, and WOW,it's terribly.

i didn't think it was that bad, until having something a bit better.

Imagine if I had a SLR

My S30 was totally lousy at F4.9 at AFing in anything but a solar
flare - Sheesh , you'd need a nuclear blast to focus F5.3 :(

Decent lens?
Not sure,as the jury is still out.
it's a slightly SLOWER lens,and that's not good.
I didn't notice the aperture, F5.3 in combination with Canon's
traditional lousy AF ( it was bad enough at F3 on the long end of
on the G5) doesn't look good after all

f/5.3 is a joke; it's not a 1D mk II where you can just turn the ISO up and still get buttery smooth images. I've knocked back plenty of cameras just on their crappy lens speed alone. Now look at Leicas Digilux lens spec f/2-2.4. I think a f/2.8-4 should have been bare minimum spec.

I love wide angle lenses. Was serriously pondering the Oly 5060,
but given its dubious reliability and price, I'll opt for the S60
if the lens is sharp. No Ricoh GX will ever be sold in the USA, so
that camera is out of the question for me.
More's the pity for US photgraphers....the Caplio GX would give a bit of competition to the s50/50 with 1 sec start up, 0.12 shutter lag, AA batteries, iso hot shoe, TIF format, as well as a price challenge...

14 months, S45, thought I wouldn't like the door, never a problem.

Olympus has a similiar design, don't know who copied who?

TIF in a digicam is obsolete due to its extreme inefficiency. RAW contains more information (since in-camera TIF files are typically 8-bit/pixel/channel) yet yields much smaller file sizes.

No biggie. I bought the S400 with no door.

But since you mention Olympus, I will have to mention that its door is very firmly attached, while the Canon one has little tracks that it easily can misalign on. Works for you, but I didn't want to mess with it.

..were not enough to break the door.

I truthfully just stuff my S30 into my jeans, usually with just enough room for my keys in the same pocket and my cell phone and wallet in the other. I then run to catch the subway. Two years later, the door still works perfectly.

That said, the Olympus door seems even more study, so I probably could play soccer with it in my jeans without a problem.

Do you think we might see a black S-60 in U.S.A. market? It would look kinda nice with that black teleconverter Canon is offering.....

What reliability problems? Given that the 5060 is listed at B&H for $499 right now, how is that better than the $499 for the S60? There's also the nice 0.7x wide converter too...

Peter both you and Adam seem to want to keep MP below 5 & 6 respectively. I have the S-45 whice is a 4MP and a great performer. I am thinking of upgrading to the s-60 to take advantage of more megapixels. I am wondering why the two of you would like to keep the MP count lower. Do you feel the same way with a interchangeable lens camera. Thank you in Advance

Just do a search for "5060 Mode Dial" in the forums here, or on Yahoo's!! 405080 forum or on Steve's Digicam forums and you'll find many, many (if not scores) of complaints about mode dial failures and other electronic problems. No thanks.

The black S-60 will appear.... the day after I buy the silver one. :)

Hmmm? 5060 for $499. I hadn't realized they were that low. Doubt the S60 will be much cheaper. I may have to reconsider - though the mode dial problems still bug me.

I dont like Canon's policy of "dumbing down" the technology.

I was looking forward to this camera, and if it had have had a decent fps VGA video mode i'd have been first in the queue to buy it.

As is i'll probably look at the Sony W1 or Fuji 710 now. Just in the same way i opted for a Minolta A2 instead of the Pro. Up until just recently all my digital cameras had been Canon.

Mike
My s300 (Ixus 300) has 20 fps and it is more than 3 years old!!!

I don't want to keep MP low. I just don't like the 5MP 1/1.8" sensor which tends to be noisier and more prone to purple fringe.

I also think that the 4mp vs 5mp is a visible difference in just about any print size.

Heck I would like the rumored second generation 1Ds Mk2 which was speculated to have 16MP. :-)

I have nothing against MP. There is just a point where the pixels get too small in a given form factor.
