Please shed some light here...I did a search and have a little confusion over the best paper for Canon's six color printers.

Does this ranking look right?

1. Ilford classic gloss
2. Ilford classic pearl
3. Canon PPP

Now there is very info little on papers from HP, Epson and Kodak or third party papers like Red River. Any comments?

I want to stock up can you point me toward your favorite vendor?

THANKS!

I really really like Epson Colourlife with the i860, and don't like Canon PPP in the least. It gave me the worst volour fading. I also really like Epson Heavy weight matte.

Canon has supposedly changed their Canon PPP, but it has been solely word of mouth. I am not going to try tho till I see something alittle more definite.

Many people (myself included) encountered pooling problems with the Ilford Classic papers (Pearl is slightly less than Gloss in this respect); others do not have (or notice) the problem. It seems to depend on the temperature and relative humidity of the environment.

I would suggest that you try some out before buying them in quantity.

Sorry, don't like any of the above. Ilford Classic Gloss is a bad match
for my i950 - lots of pooling. Some say they get good results with
Classic Pearl, but I get pooling with that, too.

The following is a list of papers that I have found to work extremely
well with the i950/i960:

1. Ilford Smooth Gloss
2. Ilford Smooth Pearl
3. Epson PGPP
4. Epson Heavy Weight Matte

Robert I thought I read on the Ilford site that the smooth gloss is more prone to gas fading: How do your prints fare?

I wonder if dry enviroments like mine (Southern California) would have any less pooling, are you in a humid area?

Yes, Ilford Smooth Gloss is more prone to gas fading, but it produces
superior quality images with zero pooling. I keep all my loose prints in
Light Impressions storage boxes, and mount my display prints behind
glass. So far, I have not experienced any gas fading issues. Likewise,
for Epson PGPP, which is an excellent paper.

I live in the Chicagoland area, which is not very humid. Rainfall, here,
is far less than Atantic and Pacific coasts. No real problems in this neck
of the woods.

I did a couple of prints on the Photo Velvet Double-Sided and am very impressed! I placed my order for it yesterday.

I agree with Robert's recommendations.

On my i950 the Classic Gloss pooled. I threw the box away. Both the smooth gloss and the epson PGPP worked wonderfully. I've had no problems with fading on either of those.

The Office Depot house brand also works well but its prone to fading. I've got pictures hanging on the wall printed on both the Ilford SG and OD papers and after 6 moths, the OD pictures are noticably faded. The Ilford SG pics still look like they've just been printed.

Ilford SG can be bought at Sams club for roughly $25/100 8x10 sheets. The Epson paper can be bought at Costco for roughly $20/120 sheets.

I've tried both HP and Kodak paper and the pooling was pretty horrible. I suggest you stay away from them.

A point of clarification:

The Epson paper at Costco ($20/120 sheets) has a Product Code S041141; it was previously called simply Photo Paper and is now renamed Glossy Photo Paper. Its surface is not smooth, with a "pebbly" texture, and has the following specifications:

Basis Weight 52 lb. (196 g/m²)
Thickness 9.4 mil
ISO Brightness 89 (but says 99 on package)

The Epson PGPP stands for Premium Glossy Photo Paper, Product Code S041286, and is a very different (and much more expensive, MSRP $15/20 sheets) paper. It has a smooth, high gloss surface, with the following specifications:

Basis Weight 68 lb. (252 g/m²)
Thickness 10.4 mil
ISO Brightness 92

The two papers look very different, even to the naked eye.
the epson PGPP worked wonderfully.

The Epson paper can be bought at Costco for roughly $20/120
sheets.

What's the recommendation for the i960 as far as precut 4x6 goes? (One that's less fade-prone than the Canon PPP)?

Furthermore, are there any swellable precut 4x6 papers out there that work well?

I'd take Ilford Classic Gloss off the list.

To be honest the list isn't a best to worst list but rather a situation/solution list. In my case the list looks like this:

Longest lasting, no gas fading worries: Ilford Classic Pearl. Pooling is there when heavy shadows or underexposure are present. It's not as significant as with other papers so if you can control it it's worth it to use this paper because it's the best shot you've got in terms of longevity. If you're going to frame it, put a matte in front to keep it from sticking to the glass. Looks really classy too.

Long lasting, framed or albumns: Epson or Red River matte's. You wouldn't notice that it's matte behind the glossy sheen of glass anyhow so why bother with a gas fading prone porous paper?

Glossy prints to pass around: Ilford Smooth Gloss or Epson Premium Glossy. The ilford is my personal favorite. Waterproof and excellent gloss finish that is more durable than PPP. By far the best results I can get come on this paper, I have it profiled by Cathy and my prints are absolutely stunning.

The gas fading issue is a you have it or you don't issue. As others suggested, give Ilford Smooth Gloss a try and set it out for a month or two unprotected. If you see gas fading you have it . . If not, you'll be enjoying your print for a few years.

Hope this helps.

Oh one more thing: Kodak and HP . . . Hit/Miss ratio is 1/10 maybe? I don't use Kodak because pooling is the most terrible of the lot . .

One paper that was not mentioned and gives beautiful results on the Canon printers is the Epson Premium Luster. This is a non glossy paper thats works very well on my Caon S9000 and the Canon I960. Very nice results..

Has anyone any info on the "supposedly new" Canon PPP. I read something about it, but absolutely nothing on the Canon site (when I last looked about a week ago)

Cathy

P.S. Have just picked up a pack of Ilford smooth Pearl. Works beautifully on my 2200 and I have a print sitting out on my "fade test site" AKA the fridge, that has just come from my i860. Looks really really nice...hope the fade demons stay away!!!

I nearly grabbed a pack of that paper (EPL) but at $35 for a 50 pack I decided to go through my stock of Epson Colorlife and Ilford Classic Pearl (Yikes, forgot to mention that these are the same in my post) before trying the luster.

I have seem prints made on Epson Premium Luster and it's a wonderfull paper. I think I've started liking the pearl and matte look much better than glossy. I don't care for the sheen that glossy prints have that causes you to have to move the photo around in your hands to view it without glare.

I just picked up some precut 4x6 Printasia (Ilford Smooth Pearl) and it looks fantastic too. No pooling and my profile from Cathy for the smooth gloss appears to be perfect for this paper also. Win win for me . . Of course since it's essentially a porous paper with a pearl finish it will likely gas fade like the rest.

Beyond those already mentioned, I would have to bubble up Printasia's papers. These come in both Gloss/Pearl finishes and perform quite well on Canon printers. Usually, Compusa has 2 fer sales and then the paper becomes quite a bargain. Otherwise, the Ilford in bulk is cheaper.

Printasia is more akin to the "classic" series - it is an RC paper rather than a nanoporous. Consequently, it will probably be less prone to gass fading than the "smooth" series. FWIW, I haven't experienced any significant gas fading with Printasia.

I can't speak for all Printasia but this particular pack (Photo Printasia Premium Photo Pearl Paper, 4x6 precut 100 sheets) is not akin to the classic series. The paper is completely waterproof unlike Classic Pearl which will lose the image when submerged under water and rubbed.

I've never used Smooth Pearl but if it's anything like Smooth gloss in this respect then I'd say this particular Printasia paper is like Smooth Pearl. That being the case it may still gas fade, though I'm not stating that fact but rather just making an assumption at this point. I'll repost in a month with my findings on this (gas fading of this printasia paper).

Mark, I print quite happy with Illford Classics/Galleries with my i965 - but be sure to get your own custom ICC Profile to get perfect results.

Check google or our web site for ICC suppliers, or get the tools your own. You won't regreat, as you can use any ink on any paper (as long as it makes sense of course), if you have profiled it.

Bye,
Andy

I didn't say identical, but 'akin' as in RC rather than nanoporous. If you have significant gas fading, let me know since this is contrary expected (as well as my personal) findings.
