Hi,

I read that a NEF file was 5,5meg so i should be able to shoot almost 100 of them on my 512 compact flash (delkin devices)
But, on field u can only store 50 to 55 of them, so what's wrong?
Is it a firmware problem?

Thanks

I have no idea. I'm wondering too...
My 512MB ultra II can fit only 47 for NEF

AIUI, NEFs are like JPEGs in that the size of the file depends on the complexity of the image, so it can be anything up to 10 megs. 50-55 would be right if they are all complex images.

My solution is a 4Gb microdrive.

Hie Ben, I am sorry but i think that my pics are all "standard" pics: people, landscapes etc. So I can't imagine why all my pictures would be complex. To me your argument would explain the fact that 70 images fit on a 512 meg card but is not relevant IMHO when it comes to explaining why there are only 50 of them on such a card.

Have you actually filled up an entire card, or are you just going by the number displayed on the LCD?

The camera displays 47 on the counter on a formatted 512mb card, but I've managed to fit that much using only 300mb or so of space. From what I can tell, that number is a worst case estimation.

There are some old threads about this issue.

Firstly format CF card on camera, NOT on PC. The number shown by D70 is the number of RAW that AT LEAST the card will hold.

Do not care too much what number is, just keep shooting untill "Card full" shown. Norrmally 521 MB can hold 88-90 RAW.

On my D70, when card is empty, it shows 46. The number reduces 1 by average every two raw taken. When it shows 1 left, actually I already took 87 RAW, I still can take another one before "CARD full" shown.

Since RAW files vary in size, the D70 counter is conservative in its estimate. I have had RAW files as larage as 6.8megs and as small as 4.9megs.

I think the firmare is not taking into consideration that the file is compressed. I want a truer count. If they want to be conservative the make the average 6mb.

I can just hear it now: The camera said I had 4 pictures left but I was only able to fit 3 more on the card. It's a bug and I want it fixed!.

Good grief, ain't life too short for this sort of stuff?
