thanks..very nice pic. especially love the bird. How did you capture that bird ?

By the way , I was told that tamron made better lens than sigma is it true ?

I do not know which is better,I researched the sigma , tamron and the Nikon 200 , for the price differance of the nikon and the other two I went with the sigma, I think Sigma makes a quality lenses, all of my other lenses are nikon.
I shot the bird hand help in my back yard.
I think I cropped that image about 30%.

I did not get the lens for that, I got it for macro, but it works nicely at distance too.

Actually i also itend to get the sigma 120-300mm lens also. Its a great lens too.

the sigma lens is the cheapest lens that i can afford as compared to the nikon for that same specs of the lens.

if you have money,
Go for Nikon 200m Micro - for distance

the sharpest from Tamron is 90mm f2.8 (Di version will release by end of May)
the best from Sigma is 105mm f2.8 micro.

However, Sigma & Tamron 180 not sharp enough compare to those 3 lens

I would buy the Tamron 180mm Di macro lens if I were in the market for a new macro tele today. This new Tamron design is testing out extremely highly in the US and European photography magazines, and I have seen some photos from it from current USA users--it has a wonderful image quality, and a lovely image "characteristic" to it (bokeh if you will, but it is much more than that). I do not buy the idea or allegation that the Tamron 180 is less sharp than the 200 AF-D Micro-Nikkor,but then again, I have not seen a direct, carefully controlled, scientific comparison of the Tamron and Nikkor lenses....has ANYbody???

The Sigma 180 f/3.5 APO HSM IF macro has a lot of buzzwords....HSM focusing with full-time manual focus override, Apochromatic, internal focusing, nice removeable lens hood, light in the hands, feels good, doubles as a spots/action.nature lens due to the ultra-speed HSM focusing....mine still Errs out on my Nikons and Fuji bodies....the Sigma 180 f/3.5 is a sort of dual-purpose design, capable of action photography with manual focus override, where the Nikon and Tamron lenses are designed differently, with more conventional screwdriver-driven focusing systems, aimed at being used EITHER in Manual Focus mode or in Autofocus mode, but without the abiloity to rapidly switch to hand-corrected focusing.

If you want a "macro" lens for macro-range shots of flowers, insects, reptiles, etc I would buy the Tamron or the 200 Micro-Nikkor....If you want a macro-capable lens that is also usable for sports, nature, and outdoor candid photography at distance, and where focusing speed and hand-holdability and lightweight design are all needed, then I'd buy the Sigma 180 3.5 Macro.

Hi not having the new version of the Sigma 180 mm I have the older version the f2.8 one both of these lenses are designed as true macro lenses i.e. corrected for close focus and I think anybody would be hard pushed to see any difference from a correctly exposed photograph but if you want a lens that does focus extremely fast then I would buy the Sigma but I have to point out that you really don't use autofocus when using the lens in macro just a footnote you will have to prize my Sigma lens out of my dead cold clammy hands before I would replace it with another.

This is clearly the macro lens to get right now. I've got the Nikkor 200mm f/4D and it's a great lens, but all things considered, you'd have to go some to beat the Tamron 180 Di macro for optical performance. Forget about the Sigma.

looking at the picture tony posted sigma seems good. But of course I have not seen the pic taken from nikon & tamron so i cant comment much.

I read many posts when I was deciding on a macro lens. The Tamron seemed to win out over all the others, even the Nikkors. It is the only non-nikon lens I have. I like it so much I may consider getting the new 90Di when it comes out. I really like the distance the 180 allows me, like for this bug photo I shot today.

Make sure you have a good tripod.
