I have only just taken up photography and want to have a go at using the flash. I've read in the manual that you can use the SB800 to fire slave units remotely. Is there any way to fire a single SB800 when it is not attached to the hotshoe. I want to try some portrait shots with the flash to the side but only have the one unit. Can it be used in-sync with the built-in flash? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use the SB-800 as wireless fill flash. It's pretty cool. You can position it just about anywhere. The on camera flash acts as the trigger. You get no help from the on camera flash for exposure.. It's a trigger only. It looks like it helps, but the control pulses from the flash happen before the shutter opens.

Thanks for the reply Charles. Do I have to change the settings on the flash to slave for this to work? Also do I have to change any of the camera settings as they are currently set to the default.

You have to do four things:
  • Set the flash to be a Remote Unit
  • Change the flash to receive on Channel 3
  • Set the camera Flash Mode (CSM 19) to be Commander Mode
  • Pop the camera flash up
That should get you started.

And set the Commander Mode to TTL.
  • Pop the camera flash up
All the normal flash warnings still apply (get out of Program exposure mode, dial in flash exposure compensation only on the body or the flash, not both, and so on).

Seriously, I just got the SB800 yesterday from B&H and on the bus home, I could not really grasp what the heck the SB800 is capable. The manual needs some serious re-writing...And this coming from someone with a degree in photography, builds his own computers and does a whole bunch of other tech stuff. It's just amazing how vague the manual is.

There are two possiblities.

1) The iTTL remote mode, this is covered by another poster, just be aware that the buildin flash is NOT adding light to the expose.

2) Using SU4 mode. This requires that the build in flash is in manual mode and the SB800 is in SU4 mode (Beware it supports two SU4 modes, it has to be the one where it is possible to select power level).
This mode is very usefull if your have lots of time.

Thanks for all the info (and links) I set it up without a problem (the manual has gone in the bin). After a bit of playing with the settings I got some really unusual shots. Thanks again.
