70-210 D nikkor

Jimbo;

thatz me......low class, yeh uh-huh. yeop. Yew got me.

btw: "thay" , a word I could not find in any adult english dictionary. I will look it up in the trailer-park library tonight, next door to my cousin Jethro's trailer. He's the smart one in the family and the only one with all his own teeth. he even usues caps!

g
In your next note, start the sentence with a cap. You get it by
holding down the shift key and punching the letter desired.
Starting with lower case is really low class.
g
Instead of monopod, why not try the rice-in-the-sock trick?
It worked GREAT for me last summer in Europe.
So what is the rice in the sock trick ?
I feel I've been set up, but I know that a lot of others would be
asking the same question. I just don't mind looking dumb !

g
Yeah - this is a great lens.

Used well, it can match the 80-200/2.8 bit by bit.

You can compensate the 2-3 stops loss by monopod + high ISO, boy we
just saved $700+ by not buying the 2.8 lens :))

Thanks, gerard.

The reason I asked is that you said "no sharpening," so I thought maybe you meant the in-camera Sharpening setting was "None." "Normal" actually has uses a bit of in-camera sharpening.

Was the photo shot as NEF or JPEG-Fine?

BTW, I have this lens, and I love it, too. I'm just trying to understand what I'm looking at when I see such an extraordinarily sharp-looking image.

Now I know why most companies place disclaimers on their products; I will bet SOMEONE here actually considered the possibility of WEARING the socks with rice. Rice does absorb moisture though; think about it.

Roger

Yeah, some brit company sells a bean bag with a 1/4" thread to screw onto the camera itself; but that's useless. Rice is better, more maleable and the 1/4" thread is only for "sitting " the camera horizontally on a surface. I have used the sock-o-rice vertically, pressed against walls, columns , trees, you name it. It was suggested to me by a very inventive friend of mine who is also a very accomplished photographer.

I just empty it when I travel from one city to the next and refill it later. Guys, this thing REALLY works......and I found myself using it in leu of a tripod I would say 70% of the time while travelling in Europe.

g
Take a plain sports sock..fill with plain (uncooked!!) rice .....

It was Nef. I have never used jog on the D70 yet....dunno if I ever will.
I understaand there is a min. in-camera sharpening, but it is very slight.
Also, keep in mund this was shot with a very low sun, 7:00pm PST.

Gerards,

I am sorry to ask for more info of your Nikorr 70-210D. What is the max aperture etc.

I just can not find it in any internet shop, and can find it in the Nikon euro webb site ?

KC
I just received my used 70-210 D from KEH. $205

Oh man.....what a great lens. SMALL when retracted. Short as the
kit lens almost (1/2 inch dif + -).

I just barely was able to snap a few pics at 7:00 pm , almost no
sunlight left. Even hand held...sharp, clear images at 145mm.

I will test it more in the am.

Full image and 100% crop. Hand held at 1/800 f/4.8 at 7:00pm (evening)
145 mm zoom. Notice how the text is legible. That is the oven vent
on the roof of my house, shot from the back yard.

FJP, I am looking forward for ur comparison... especially on the AF
speed and quality..
I will be astounded if the Sigma focuses as fast as the Nikon. That's not how I plan on judging this camera. The Nkon focuses with blazing speed and would not expect the Sigma to match it. That's not why I'm buying it. I like to take my time setting the composition and focus.
If you are convenience, I am interested to see some action shot,
for eg. kid run around at 300mm.
I'm not skilled at that. The only action photography I've done is try to follow my cockatoo around and catch her antics or her flying. I'm much more into landscapes and flora. Sorry. I would report on comparisons of focusing accuracy for static subjects, sharpness, build quality, and handling.

I just got the Sigma today. I commented on the pitiful way UPS treated the external box on the D70 forum.

I'm at work so can't run any tests. I was very impressed by the quality of the handsome green lens case that came with it. Sigma is obviously trying to give a great first impression, and I certainly didn't expect such a quality case to come with such an inexpensive lens. Are you listening Nikon? Nikon, apparently, does not have to compete, and only provides throw-aways with the DX lenses I've bought from them so for (even the included 12-24 case is pretty useless, at least for me). I'm sure the case that comes with the 17-55 DX lens will be a different story, although I haven't heard.

The lens itself is about the same weight and size as the Nikon 70-210mm f/4-5.6D, but the lens hood is bigger for some reason. Maybe they want to be more conservative at the wide end. The front lens cover is nothing special and I will undoubtedly replace it with one of those very nice Tamron covers, which Nikon is now imitating with the covers for the DX lenses.

The lens zooms smoothly out but is sticky zooming back in. Haven't read the instructions yet but the markings on the lens barrel seem cryptic and I didn't see any markings that suggested this lens went down to 1:2 at 300mm.

The lens housing is plastic, but not offensively so. What do you want for a couple hundred bucks?

That's about all I can tell you until I get home and can use it. I probably won't have time to put it into action until sometime this weekend.

Congrats on having both lenses. I have compared Sigma APO II to Nikkor ED 70-300 and I see the Sigma has much less if any purple fringing.

Does the 70-210D Nikkor have any ED elements? would be interesting if you could do quick comparison of the two lenses.

Also, as I noted in another post that if you shoot at the 200-300mm zoom end, it is best not to use a filter to get the most out of the lens (sharpness and contrast). I have found that even my Hoya HSM Skylight filter slightly degrades the sharpness and contrast of the lens. I now shoot naked. For a $200 lens I don't think I will invest a $100+ high quality filter on it. What I do is put the filter on and then take it off when shooting. Share some pics will soon ! KTN

I don't think those were invented yet when that lens was made! Just kidding. It's a pretty basic lens, just really high quality for the price.

Good idea. Maybe I will. Will be interesting if you could notice a difference with the small images usually posted.

And shame on YOU.

Right on.

The following picture was taken on the shores of our neighborhood duck pond: f/32, 300mm, manual focus and exposure, SB-800 flash, on a tripod.

That flower is about 1/2" in diameter. I think the photo was taken at max magnification. Notice the little bug in there.

Very nice...What clarity...I noticed the tiny "hairs" on the leaf and stem of the plant...I think you have a very capable 1:2 macro lens.
oh..and so do I and others who have bought this lens and know how to it!

I took 70 pictures in that session. Maybe I'll post one or three more, and maybe one that doesn't pound the image with a direct blast from the SB-800 as I did in the image posted.

I just got a 70-210--non D--off eBay ($130). It's in great condition. But at anything longer than 100mm, the AF hunts and hunts and will not lock. It finally parks at the closest focus setting.

On manual focus, it's very sharp.

I'm using it on an S2. Anyone have this experience? Will switching to a "D" version help?

Thanks, Jack

Just to confuse you folks :))

I have only 3 lenses, the 70-210D, the 50mm / 1.8 D and the "kit" lens with D70.

The 70-210D is my favorite lens :)

It focuses really really fast. Ken Rockwell thinks the same.

See my flying mallard pic - it is impossible to grab a pic like that without fast focus.

I use a D70 fwiw.

NICE AND SHARP! Much much better than my 70-300 ED Nikkor. Too bad this lens is going for around $250-$300 USED on ebay now lol. IT's actually selling more used than new. OH why can't Nikon release a competitor to Canon's 70-200 4L? With nikon we either get a cheapie 70-300 ED or G or we blow the bank with the ~$1000 a 80-200 2.8.
