There were several folk with dRebels, but I only saw one beige lens besides my 70-200 f/4, the guy in 1611, 1612, and 1614.

Actually, I only talked to one guy. He had an Olympus C-5050Z, the camera I used to have before the 10D. He reminded me of me. He had it mounted on a fully extended plastic Velbon tripod, looking into the LCD viewfinder, and fiddling with the settings. I walked up and asked, "Is that a 5050?" He answered yes it was and that it was more camera than he knew what to do with. I replied that it was a good camera and was one he could grow in to, which it is. I looked down at my 10D hanging off my neck and thought to myself, "I know the feeling, buddy, I know the feeling!" grin

The woman in 1614 has this expression that says, "He's gotta be
compensating....."

Come to think of it, if I just didn't have the same lens and
roughly the same body type, it would be a little more funny!!!

I never could figure out what the aluminum foil was all about except maybe it's holding the flash together?

Yeah, that woman's face is priceless in 1614. That was the only beige lens I saw there besides mine.

I took my 10D to an air show today. We had a blast. We got to
meet lots of other people with cameras. Here are a few:
What's the deal with everyone who has flash units? "Oh, he's compensating~professional, he's got some juryrigged doohickey on top of his camera." They're not going to be very effective out on the flight line, nevermind in the bleachers. Maybe there were a lot of indoor exhibits that would be difficult without flash?

Maybe I'm just an available-light kind of guy.

Did you get any shots of the stealth bomber? I got a few as it was leaving and flying over the beach, but they are bad.....

Oh, and there were a few airplanes, too. They can be seen here.
Enjoy!

Some nice pics, my only suggestion is for you to shoot TV instead of AV. Some of the props are stopped on flying aircraft.

Shoot TV @ 1/400 for prop planes flying and on take off. Prop planes idling on runway or when landing at lower rpms, 1/250. Jets, 1/1000 or whatever, no need for prop blur on them :-) unless of course the guy with the jet assisted Waco is there.

I wondered that myself, Ed. I certainly didn't use mine. There is a hanger with other planes and exhibits, but I just used available light on the few I took inside.

Oh, no, I didn't see the stealth. The show was supposed to be Saturday and Sunday, but Saturday most of it was washed out. That must have been the day the stealth was there because it wasn't there on Sunday.

...thanks for the great suggestion. Maybe others who aren't experienced at this sort of shooting, like me, will find it helpful, too. This was my first air show with my 10D, so I kept forgetting about that. I did remember to do it on a few of the shots because I read in one of the threads a while back about the prop freezing at higher shutter speeds. I did switch to Tv mode and dropped down to 1/160 and 1/200 when I remembered. Hopefully, I'll keep that in the back of my mind for all the times the prop is turning next time. Thanks.

Steve,

You've got some great shots there, I especially liked the B-25 (1748) and B-17 (1796) with their bomb bay doors open, and the F6-F (1630) is good too, except for that frozen prop!

One way in which you could dramatically improve these photos is by cropping them more tightly, so the planes come closer to filling the frame.

best wishes,

Richard

...thank you and I certainly enjoyed looking through your site; nicely done! I am going to go back and crop some of the shots that need it. I had close to 250 shots that I had to download, adjust, edit, and resize. In the end, I was rushing through them because it was getting late and I was tired. I'll definitely go back through them and follow your suggestion. Again, thanks.

He must be compensating!!! What's with the 550 for when the planes are way out of reach??? :-)

You gotta be kidding! I just got my 10D Friday, as you know, it rained in Houston Saturday, and I didn't know about the airshow on Sunday. I LOVE airshows.

DANG!!!!

Nice collection btw.

Do you get the best results with single shot or AI servo? For AI servo, do you have all focus points active or just one?

I would like to go to an airshow this summer but don't want to blow half my shots experimenting. Thanks.
