Hi Guys,

I have just returned from my first camping trip this season here in Canada, and I had a great time and will post some pix soon. But I learned a new fact. The Kodak rapid charger can be rendered useless, (unless U have an extension cord !!!) in certain situations:

This happened to me in two occasions, in two different campgrounds.

I resolved the problem by charging the battery in the campground washrooms which had a regular electrical outlet, but it is not a good idea, because it can be stolen... (unless one is willing to watch over them for 3 hours in a public restroom) Fortunately the camps were almost empty this time of the year, only 5 trailers and a nutcase like me with a tent were the only occupants, so the chance was slim for theft...

So,there You have it, On a campig trip, carry a short extension cord with You, but in this case, you can carry the dock with You instead, if You got it! Nothing is perfect, or thought out 100%..

Regards, Les

I have always said that the Dock was about the same size as the rapid charger.

I but the nice thing for someone like you is that the Rapid Charger comes with the adaptors for when you travel to your home country...

Hi Les/Dave,

Is the rapid charger really the same size as the dock? I was thinking about getting the rapid charger for a trip in a couple of months (I would like to travel lightly), but if they are the same size maybe I will just bring the dock along.

BTW, Les, it looks like the prongs are just bent. Is the charger really broken?

Hi Les,

So where did you go camping in Canada at this time of year? Have you been out west to the Canadian Rockies camping yet?

Hi JM,

The charger is about half the size of the Dock, and it is not broken.

I made a mistake in my post, by not describing the problem. Most outdoor electrical outlets have "covers" which do not open all the way, or have hinges...which prevent the charger to be inserted properly, or should say ..do not allow to insert it at all !!!
Hence You need an axtension cord or an adapter to prolongate the prongs.
Something like this, the prongs according to country ,(these are EU):

Hope this clarifies the confusion.

Hi Les, And thanks for posting that invaluable tip, this Forum is just the best.

Hoping to see some pics from the camping trip:)

Eric R.
Hi Eric,

I spent the most beautifull 6 weeks of my life about 6 years ago, when I toured with my wify, the Rockies of BC and AL. Managed to see Vancouver Island too. After the sixth week I bought a car in Calgary for a thousand bucks, drove it to Montreal, sold it for a hundred at a scrap yard, and still saved on airfare for the two of us back to Montreal. We kept sleeping in our tent in my friends' backyard while waiting for our departure flight to Prague. We refused to sleep in his dormer bedroom, haha
PS: Too bad I did not have my 6490 back then.
Thanks for Replying Les

G,Day Les,

Thanks for the tip, I guess people would take a dim view of guys hanging around the public loo for three hours, might think your a bit strange.

You just cant beat camping, crisp morning air, will you be posting any of your pics from your trip?

I decided against a full blown caravan for my forthcoming trip, picked up a nice campertrailer instead, still have a bit of a camping bug, love the sound of the canvas blowing in the wind.

While it is about 40% of the size of the doc, the other benefit of carrying the rapid charger instead of the dock is that you can charge a spare battery while you are using one in the camera.

Maybe that is obvious! (But the point is the dock is useless in that regard.)

I hardly ever use the dock anymore -- I either plug a USB cable directly into the camera or use a card reader.

Whenever I plug a USB cable directly into the camera, however, I can't help but wonder how many times I can bend that rubber cover (which protects the USB, power, and other jacks) before it breaks off.

Has anyone's cover (oops, I almost said rubber ;-)) broken?

BTW: Les -- am looking forward to seeing your pictures!

Les,, i take it you must have a tent ? ? ?...As most trailers have outlets inside,,,a friend of mine uses one of those adapters you can buy that plugs into the outlet and makes three plugs,,,do you know what i mean,,,it's small, easy to carry in your camera bag and one of the outlets points straight at you,,,the other two are on the side...you know the one grandma used to plug in behind the TV so that all the wires are pointing out everywhere...If you want i'll post a pic of one,,,should have one here somewhere..

Dear Brian,

I do not have a trailer, because at this point of time it is not my priority, and besides, it is difficult to portage.........

The divider You are mentioning would work only at my situation, as long as less it is vertically devided...But then again Kodak should have thought of that, my Remington shaver/trimmer charger fits in everything...

So, since I do not have a trailer, which has the same plug as the campground washrooms, I will carry with me either the dock, or an extension cord, or an adapter I showed above..

Looks like I am an old fashioned dinosaur regarding camping, but I still love the wind blowing through the fly of my tent, the birds singing, the creatures rumbling around it, and it is so easy to set up or dismantle... not to mention hiking or portaging over lakes and rivers..

I have to agree,,,if you use a camper with all the features then it's not getting out into nature,,,,it's just moving your home to nature,,,not the same at all,,,and it's still the best way to go out and stay where you want to,,,not where everyone else would,,

There is camping ( that is with a tent ), and there is motor-homing. Never really understood the allure of motor-homing. But maybe a small Volkswagen van would be fun.
