I have been reviewing digital cameras for about 8 weeks now and despite the negativity on the S10 posted here, I have decided to buy one anyway.
The reasons are simple.

First, after looking Phil's review of the camera and other pictures posted on this site and others, I am convinced that this camera without question produces the best pics,

Second, I acknowledge that there are a few minor problems as stated by Ken, friend of Ken, or whatever he is calling himself these days. However, after reading the Nikon (950 quality not as good and other problems-read posts from Allyn, etc) and Oly forums (Stuck pixels, bluish tint, etc. on the 2020), I realized that the other 2 cams I was seriously considering had their share of problems also. In addition, there appears to be easy fixes for the AWB and shutter speed problems - I never expected cams such as these to work well in auto anyway.

Finally, I expect Canon will be releasing a firmware update for these problems soon and if not, the work arounds are simple enough.

Ken or whoever you are today, it seems like the solution to your problem is to simply buy a 19.95 Kodak Instamatic. This is a relatively simple point and shoot camera and should solve all your problems.

Thanks to everyone for all the comments, advice and pics to review. You've helped me tremendously.

Hi Ed,

Congratulation on your decision to buy the S-10. Like I said many times in this forum that there isn't a perfect digi cam. All digi cams today have some shortcomings and it's a matter of question whether you can live with that or not.

Some people expect the camera to work perfectly in auto mode in any situation and that they don't like a little work around.I wish we had such a camera today for the same price.

What I expected from this camera most was a high image quality and ease of use and I'm very pleased with both.

It seems like there are some defective cameras out there, so make sure to check that your camera works right when you got it.

Hide,

Thanks - I will. Will be getting it tomorrow. Just bought an HP P1100 to go with it. I think this is a good combo.

By the way, USB and Compact Flash II are also important factors. Why buy old technology?

Best wishes,
Ed

You are missing the point(and shoot) BODY!!!!!
I got myself a Nikon 800 and believe the pixs are great!!!
Is a real POINT and SHOOT , I mean AUTO- MODE!!!
and if you have been reviewing digital cameras for 8 weeks and you will go ahead
with the S10 you are a fool.

Hide,

Thanks for the advice.

Just got my camera and have taken some pics. Looks great! Very good quality images. Of course, it does take some time to get used to the settings, but they are well laid out and I am quickly becoming accustomed to changing settings as appropriate. This camera has an amazing low light capability. Coupled with the HP-P1100, my 4x6 shots on glossy look like real prints, come out in 30 seconds and are dry at that!

As a final thought, I have no desire to buy an S-20 - appears to be the essentially same camera with higher resolution - S10 resolution is high enough for my purposes.

Ed

Hi Ed,

So, you got a HP 1100! Wow. A great printer. When you took some shots please post them so that we can see them.

The S-10 is a killer at night shots. Go to my photo albums and check at 'My favorites". You'll see some night shots there.

New Technology????
Does not mean better.....
USB not a great deal, you will need a card flash reader for firmwares updates!
It is easier and faster a card reader than the USB.
CFII..?
Micro drives kills batteries faster!

Ken,

In this case, USB allows me to upload my 1.5 MB photos at record spped. I call that better.

I have a 48 MB CFII flash card and it seems more than enough - holds about 30 High rez pics at full compression and 75 High rez pics at moderate compression.

Therefore, I have no intention of purchasing a Micro Drive anyway. I doubt that I will even need another CF card.

Finally, I have the money for a flash reader so it's no big deal to me either.

But thanks for your always insightful advice.

Hide,

Already been to your photo site. It was one of the sites I reviewed before making up my mind to buy an S-10. Great photos and it helped me make up my mind.

I took about 50 photos today, touched up many of them and printed about 20. I must say, at 4" by 6" I cannot tell the difference between analog and the S-10. I'm very pleased. Will post some as soon as I find a site to upload.

Best wishes,

FYI for those interested,

Just checked and my 48MB card will hold 31 1600x1200 pics at minimal compression. That means that the 80 MB cards will hold about 61 pics.

EdK,

Glad your happy with your S10. It sounds like you did your homework in researching the camera that meets your needs. As you read, I had a bad experience with my S10. Maybe it was a defective camera... I'd like to think so. I would like to say that I really like my Nikon 950. It takes a great picture every time and I don't have to practice (as Hide says... practice, practice, practice.). It is not as small as the S10 and honestly, I really liked the S10s design... but, I don't have to worry about my pictures coming out great.

And... for what it is worth.. I think that Ken is an A-hole that really needs help.

Best of luck!

Ken was tired of people saying I love my S10, like they were talking about a woman. The camera has good things and bad things, thanks to Ken Canon is taking notice!

Allyn,

Glad you are happy with your 950. I seriously considered that cam also. I think you made a great choice - just could not get used to the feel of the 950. Also, the S-10 does require some patience and practice to get those really great shots. I don't mind this and I feel the results are more than worth the effort. Plus, I am learning about my camera and how to use it properly - which I actually enjoy.

By the way, agree with you about Ken. Don't understand what he is trying to prove here. Most normal people with an 800 would be talking in the Nikon forum-not in this one.

Guess he feels he needs to justify his choice by making everyone else feel they have made the wrong choice. Sounds like something a 10 year old child would do. Hey, maybe I've hit on something here! :)

Therefore, I have no intention of purchasing a Micro Drive anyway. I
doubt that I will even need another CF card.

Finally, I have the money for a flash reader so it's no big deal to me
either.

But thanks for your always insightful advice.

Thanks - I will. Will be getting it tomorrow. Just bought an HP P1100 to
go with it. I think this is a good combo.

By the way, USB and Compact Flash II are also important factors. Why buy
old technology?

Best wishes,
Ed
Hi Ed,

Congratulation on your decision to buy the S-10. Like I said many times
in this forum that there isn't a perfect digi cam. All digi cams today
have some shortcomings and it's a matter of question whether you can live
with that or not.

Some people expect the camera to work perfectly in auto mode in any
situation and that they don't like a little work around.I wish we had
such a camera today for the same price.

What I expected from this camera most was a high image quality and ease
of use and I'm very pleased with both.

It seems like there are some defective cameras out there, so make sure to
check that your camera works right when you got it.

Thanks to Ken Canon is taking notice??????

Not sure I would go that far - perhaps other people in this forum had
something to do with Canon taking notice also. Try reading the rest of
the posts on this site.

Glad your happy with your S10. It sounds like you did your homework in
researching the camera that meets your needs. As you read, I had a bad
experience with my S10. Maybe it was a defective camera... I'd like to
think so. I would like to say that I really like my Nikon 950. It takes
a great picture every time and I don't have to practice (as Hide says...
practice, practice, practice.). It is not as small as the S10 and
honestly, I really liked the S10s design... but, I don't have to worry
about my pictures coming out great.

And... for what it is worth.. I think that Ken is an A-hole that really
needs help.

Best of luck!

Just checked and my 48MB card will hold 31 1600x1200 pics at minimal
compression. That means that the 80 MB cards will hold about 61 pics.

In this case, USB allows me to upload my 1.5 MB photos at record spped. I
call that better.

I have a 48 MB CFII flash card and it seems more than enough - holds
about 30 High rez pics at full compression and 75 High rez pics at
moderate compression.
Therefore, I have no intention of purchasing a Micro Drive anyway. I
doubt that I will even need another CF card.

Finally, I have the money for a flash reader so it's no big deal to me
