I'm thinking of buying this camera but now in the middle of the road trying to figure out should I buy the kit or body only as I have this 28-105 f/3.5-4.5D IF AF Nikkor lens which I'm using with my N80. Any comments would really be appreciated with comparisons of this lens and kit lens. Thanks.

I have had a 28 - 105 for about 4 years and a great lens it is too. I bought the D70 kit lens as I need the '18' for the house internals I shoot. Ideally I would like the 12 - 24 but that will have to wait until the pockets fill up a bit.

The kit lens is very nicely balanced with the D70 camera and very good value when bought as a kit. Image wise I am very happy with sharp images across the board, however using it wide open at 18mm is best avoided due to slight vignetting. For Aus $250 you can't do better.

I think the two lens' complement each other quite well and are of very similar quality, if you are happy with the 28 - 105 you will like the 18 - 70 for sure.

If you have sufficient $$$ then perhaps go for the 12 - 24mm as that would widen your scope.

Andy, Thanks.
I'm also leaning towards buying this kit lens.

I have this lens and bought the D70 body only, not with the intent of this being my long term lens, I have the 17-55 on backorder. The 28-105 is not really wide, at 42mm equivalent.

If you liked the 28-105 range (which I considered absolutely perfect for my tastes) then the 18-70 is almost exactly the same with the 1.5x multiplier

However, I didn't like the light fall off that the 18-70 suffers at the wide end, so that tipped the balance for me to go with the 17-55 also I've always wanted an F2.8 zoom.

If you like the 28/105mm range then the kit lens covers the equivalent range. It's also AFS so in comparison with the 28/105mm it's fast and silent. The vignetting at the wide end is only present wide open and is easily corrected. The lens hood is a much more sensible size than the 28/105mm hood and you won't have any trouble in getting the lens with hood fitted to the camera into a small camera bag - such as the Lowepro Toploader Zoom 1. No macro though.
