Hi all!

I would like to enlarge some of my E10 photos. How big could I enlarge a E10 photo with perfect quality and with highest resolution with a quality good enough for public viewing? Experiences?! What technique should I chose/demand?

A photo from today. My daughter (who has become a good model!) in a chair with light from a window. Resampled, monochromatic, added some contrast & unsharp mask.

Best regards
Johan

Hi Johan,

Link did not work.

My suggestion is to use ORF not TIFF. I use genuine fractals and get great images the max size of my 1270 printer, although I typically print 14 x 11.

These are good enough for public viewing.

PS,

make sure you print at 300 resolution for the large ones.

I know you can get a 16x20 from digiprintstore.com that looks as good as a med format film camera..no fractles needed...I have them hanging on the wall here

Hi, Dave.

This seems to be an ongoing question (which is good) and concern. Have you ever printed any of your images sized at just 200 dpi with your Epson 1270? I do all the time and cannot tell a speck of difference in the ones I printed at 300 dpi and higher on my printer. I just size according to my final output needs and try to do as little upsampling (interpolating) or scaling (GF) as possible. Often this means I am printing some images at 400+ dpi in 4x5 size and the same image at 197 dpi for 8.5 x 11 size. End result, the prints are identical except for the difference in size.

Be curious if you decide to "burn" a sheet of paper and some ink to give this a try and see what you think.

Now sizing for reproduction in a magazine or other printed piece on high quality paper is another matter. I always size to 300 dpi for that purpose.

Take care,

Tom

(I use the same Epson printers.)

Johan,

I believe that the size of the print would be somewhat dependent on the subject matter. I think an image with small detail or texture wouldn't be able to enlarge as effectively as one with less detail.

One experiement that I will be doing soon is having the digital file printed by a Lightjet. This machine uses lasers to expose the photographic paper and results from image files that I have had in the past are extraodinary(but not from my E10). At sizes over 11x14 the machine that my lab uses only requires a file of 152dpi. The literature on this machine says that it uses a very complex interpolation method to print with(NASA developed). I'll know more after giving it a try. I think resizing the file to 152dpi with genuine fractals to 152 at 16x20 then running it through this machine might yield some great results. The proof will be in the pudding as they say.

I just printed a 13"x19" landscape. A heavily overcast day,
lots of moisture in the air. The scene is bare trees on a snow-
covered hill. The trees weren't real sharp...

I interpolated the image up to 300 ppi, in PS LE. Unsharp
mask 500%, 0 levels, 0.3 pixels.

The image is, at best, average, due to most of the edge
details being blurry (and maybe more importantly-dull in
contrast due to the weather conditions and haze).

I'd suspect a portrait at this size would look very good.

On the other hand, a panorama of four portrait-oriented
panels looks real good at 13x19. (Same condition as
the trees-in-snow, above.)

Both are on matte paper, which blurs edge details.
