Helo, I am using an air tight container and Blue colored silica gel I bought from the camera shop.

1. My question is how much to put ? (I have a flash and a digital camera and a memory card)

2. How often will I need to change them? when will I know I need to?

thank you

It is Ok to put in as much as possible. Change when the silica gel turns pink.

A word of caution, you would start to realise that the silica gel turns pink very fast if you need to open the box often. The gel can be recycled by heating it up until it turns blue again but would soon turn pink again very fast. My advise is that you get a small electronic dry box. If you are not using the above mentioned silica gel than you will not know when to change.

Hi Sh,

My advice is to buy a dehumidifier cabinet, no maintance, run on AC power and very very low watt and cheap only Sin$100 +. (bigger cost more)

Reason: I have used Silica gel for a couple of years (when dehumidifier cabinet was so expansive) I have so much problem, if you used your camera regularly the gel turn pink very quickly (in Singapore is very humid)

due to opening and closing the box. I notice that my cleaning cloth use as a cushion for the camera and lens tend to get warm. I heard that too much of gel for long storage will be too dry for the camera, the grease in the camera will dry up. I used lots of gel in the past few years, and try to re cycle is one thing you do not want to do lots of work.

Now with my dehumidifier cabinet, I can open and close without having to check the gel, it even comes with a meter to check the humidity and temp. I set to 50 and the temp is always at 28 deg C.
Long run it will pay for itself and most of all convince.

Hops this help.

No will not improve camera performance. Just to prevent fungus or mold growing on the lens and keep camera dry.
