Here is my proposal for Challenge 53

Architecture - Beyond the Ordinary

Everybody normally works and lives in very ordinary and common
structures that you give little notice to. There are times, though
that you pass by a building or structure and something about it
stirs up an emotion, be it a feeling of power, beauty, calm,
disgust etc. The purpose of this challenge is to try to capture
those structures that are built by man, be it either buildings,
bridges, gardens (landscape architecture), windows, doors or water
features that bring up those feelings that are beyond the ordinary
structures you see on a daily basis. Even negative feelings can be
included. You can name the photos anything but it would be nice to
have some sort of description as to why you feel this form of art
creates something special for you. The features can be related to
color, textures, lighting, patterns, form or any of the various
tools the architect uses to create his unique expression to the
building. There are also no restrictions on whether the structures
are urban or rural, modern or historic.

RULES AND GUIDELINES

The Canon Talk Forum Challenges are open to everyone so please
participate. You don't win anything (the eligible entry winner
picks the next challenge topic and sets up the galleries and
moderates the challenge), but it can be a fun way to practice your
photography and get some feedback.

Eligible Gallery entries must taken with a Canon digital camera and
be taken during the specified time period.

Exhibition Gallery entries can use any camera and be taken at any
time.

You may post a maximum of 3 photos in each gallery.

Photo by photo, please share your comments with your fellow
participants. Challenges reach their full potential when the
dialogue becomes as important as the photos themselves.

Those who enjoy more plainspoken and critical comments on their
work should mark their title(s) with an asterisk ( )

97% of the previous challenges have run for only 2 weekends, with one week in between.

The time we did 3 weekends & 2 weeks, the majority of the respondors to a "poll" opted to keep all the challenges at 2 weekends.
That's all we are trying to do here.

It's true we may have lost one day, but in the end we believe most people will be happier. This change will keep us on a regular schedule. It also keeps us out of phase with the DSLR challenge.

I'm all for the change, but I was annoyed (ok, not making a huge deal of it, it's just a friendly little game we play) but I didnt' get to shoot and I had plans to, and went out, only to discover the date was changed and I couldn't submit anything. We've always played the rules thru to the end of a challenge and then made the change for the next challenge. I really don't think it was fair play to change the date at the last moment like that. I bet many of us got cut short. :(

Aaaah, don't worry, Lonnit. There's always the next one.

I think the challenge got shortened by the late posting of the topic. The voting ends Friday mornings here in Australia, and the topic is usually posted by the evening......that gives me a night to think it over and a full weekend to begin shooting for the challenge. Then another full weekend to catch up!

This time around, the topic wasn't posted until halfway through my weekend, and I'd already made plans which didn't include shooting buildings. The following weekend was raining....plus it was Anzac Day and we attended the parade and memorial service. No buildings there either!

Aaaah well.....I don't think architecture is ever gonna be my strong suit....right along with bridges.....so I'll just wait til the new challenge.

I'm not worried, just annoyed b/c I didn't get to participate, especially since I like shooting architecture.

Yes, it was shortened on both ends! It started late and then it was supposed to end on May 3rd, but then that was shortened. Just annoying, that's all.

Warmly,
Lonnit

Going by the usual formula, the challenge finished only a day early.

Usually, the new challenge begins one minute after voting has closed on the previous challenge....whether the topic has been posted or not.....then runs over two weekends, to end mid-week. 12 days to upload pics, 2 days to vote, then we begin again. In this case, the date of May 3rd should not have been posted as the closing date, as that would have taken it over a 3rd weekend since the close of the previous challenge.

Am I making sense? It's not actually up to the host to determine the length of time over which a challenge runs.....it's already a set formula, unless it's an unusual circmumstance such as at Christmas. And it was a majority decision at Christmas to make it longer for that challenge only.

But I have no idea why the voting booth opened a day earlier than it should have. Going by previous challenges, it should have opened only 3 hours ago.

I don't know what happened with the voting beginning one day early. Caught me by surprise, too. I think because some people were/are traveling in other countries, the dates were thrown off by mistake.

Does the below sound right? I'm sooooo confused.

Voting ends on Thursday the 29th at 12:00AM GMT.

The next challenge begins on Friday the 30th at 12:01AM GMT. The challenge runs through Tueday May 11th at 12:00AM GMT.

Voting begins on Wednesday the 12th at 12:01am GMT running to Thursday the 13th at 12:00PM GMT.

Paul, you've just confused me even more......LOL! but that's not hard to do when it comes to world times.

Now that we are back on standard time, the challenges usually end at 10am on a Wednesday and the voting begins right away. The voting ends at 10am on Friday and the new challenge is started immediately. That's in south eastern Australia of course.....GMT means not a thing to me!

However, this time the voting began at 10am on Tuesday, not Wednesday! I am assuming the voting will still end on Friday though.

And for the new host, whoever you may be.....please, please, please decide on a topic early! Those whose images are currently in the top 5, start thinking of something now, please.

It makes it difficult for those of us who live downunder if you don't announce the topic within about 12 hours of the voting being closed. We get to the weekend beofre the northern hemisphere does and if we don't know what we're to be shooting, the weekend is half over before we find out.

but the mini challenges drive me bonkers! LOL! I don't like doing a challenge in thread format - I guess I'm spoiled by challenge galleries!

But, that doesn't mean I didn't appreciate you're being so sweet as to let me know about it! :) Thanks so much.

I'm glad you liked my car shots.

WArmly,

I am not sure if this cheers you up. But the mini challenge is
still running to the 3rd. If I recall, you had some great pictures
of cars.

Lonnit,

I'm sorry about the dates changing, they caught me by surprise as well. I got pulled out of town and had no Internet access until Tuesday over a modem and was ready to submit pictures only to find the date had changed. Since I'm new at this and did not expect to win, I was not familiar with all the standard dates for submittal and voting. I did try to get this clarified and thought we were good with the original dates posted.

Oh well, sorry for the screwups on my part, I now have some pictures of architecture I didn't have a week ago. There's always the next one.

Mark

Thanks to everybody for the great shots and congratulations to all the winners.

Sorry for all the confusion on this one. I stated early on in the last challenge that I hope I did not win as I am completely a newbie on running this. Learned a lot. The only saving grace is that the ultimately the chance to shoot and create new images is still the most important to me, and to learn and improve.

Thanks for everyone's help, especially Paul's on this. I promise not to win in the future unless I know more what I'm doing.

Great shots everyone.
