I would like to solicit recommendations for photo-editing software. Price is a major factor. I am primarily a weekend enthusiast, however since I upgraded to the CP950, I find myself delving further and further into this camera's abilities--and learning as I go. Currently I am using MS Picture It, which offers very little in the way of editing features. I would like to stay well inside of $100 if possible. Thanks for any input you may have![email protected]

Dirk,

There are numerous products which work pretty well and don't cost an arm and a leg. For a little under $100 you could get PaintShop Pro, or for a bit less, PhotoShop Lite or for about $49 Adobe PhotoDeluxe Home Edition. Any of these are pretty powerful and will let you do many fairly sophisticated photo editing processes. You could also check around on the ShareWare reviews because there are some excellent products which are really inexpensive. If you don't already have it, be SURE to order IrfanView (it's free and great for lots of things).

Dirk,

The software is a bit like the cameras themselves. When you get a package and start to learn more about the techniques and possibilities you suddenly realise that you spent too little and got the wrong model!

I use both Photoshop 6 and Paint Shop Pro 7. Photoshop is far too expensive for casual home use, but Paint Shop Pro 7 has all the essentials and more and is a real bargain at the price.

My advice is not to buy until you have tried. Paint Shop Pro 7 is available as a 30 day trial on a vast number of computer magazine 'free' CDs, or can be downloaded form http://www.jasc.com . On top of this, http://www.jasc.com has downloadable tutorials and loads of relevant links.

My advice is to try Paint shop Pro and make sure that you use the 30 days to good advantage to learn what it can do. If you then find that it is too powerful and expensive for your needs you can look elsewhere.

Like you I also own Adobe Photoshop (5.5), along with Paint Shop Pro 7 and a myriad of other graphics programs. The current version of Paint Shop Pro is WONDERFUL! Easy to come by too. Saw it at SAm's for $79.95. Had some sort of rebate opportunity, too.

If you want to print your image files, you do not have to alter your original! Try PixPrint to print your photos: as many images per page as you want, drag and drop to place them, then use your mouse to rotate, crop, adjust colors, brightness, sharpness, contrast, gamma, etc all without ever altering your original negative (image file). I like this approach better than having to alter my image files for everyone I print.

You can also easily embed caption data on the photo itself, like auto captioning of time/date or EXIF data, or a copyright notice. Very nice. It's $29.95 to register.

You can download the latest free trial at:

I know I know. Lowly Picture it. I use the 2001 Premium editon and
make it sing. There are many many features that are great and simple.

PSP is probably going to be the best choice, but you may want to wait for the expected $99 Adobe Photoshop Elements. It will be out next month (though knowing Adobe's pricing/business structure PaintShopPro will probably be the more complete package). Photoshop Elements may have some user friendly features though and will be the Prosumer step up from PhotoDeluxe.

Try QImagePro for printing multi photoas on a page and for thumbnail viewing of your photos. Also a great slideshow. Free upgrades for all new versions.

For photoediting try PhotoSuiteIII by MGI. Staples did have V 3 for $5.00 but may only have newer version now. Around $50.00. All kinds of editing tools and very easy to use. Good luck.

Dear Mr. Pruitt:

I, too, am a weekend enthusiast, and couldn't see for the life of me paying all that money for some hideously-overpriced, hard-to-learn program like Adobe Photoshop 6 -- until I bought it. Having used many other shareware, freeware, and borrow-from-friends-to-evaluateware, I found out that PS6 is simply head and shoulders among anything else.

For that reason, I'd suggest either the Photoshop Elements or PS5 LE (often bundled with printers, etc.) so that at least you'll have a chance to learn the basics and get used to the interface of this admittedly steep-learning-curve program. Then, when your financial ship comes in, you can upgrade.

Regards,

Duncan Kunz

Paint Shop Pro 7 has every major feature (and every minor one - and some that Photoshop can't boast...) that PhotoShop has. It runs PhotoShop Plugins. It's a quality product. You can find good references for it. The developer has been in business for years.

It costs $99.

Need I say more?

But why listen to me? I could be lying, or just mistaken. Go to:

http://www.jasc.com

and download your free evaluation copy. IIRC, it will let you try every feature, but it tattoos any file you try to save.

I have both PixPrint and Qimage Pro. When it comes to these two programs being used for image printing, it's no contest. Qimage Pro wins by a large margin.

A word of caution on somerthing I forgot to mention. After installing PixPrint, my system became very unstable and would lock up frequently. I had to uninstall the program and it took me a couple of hours to get my system stable again. I found out later that this program does alot of weird stuff to your registery.

Corel Photopaint 8 is available on many auction sites and with most Corel Draw programs. I paid $36 on ebay for it. It beats Adobe in some areas, esp in its' use of toolbars. It also uses Adobe plugins. I have found it to have an EASY learning curve which is not true of many other programs.

BTW Corel was just purchased by Microsoft!
