Hi

after fiddeling with new drivers I gave up and phoned Olympus and asked if my camera 2100UZ could/should show up as a removable HD.

And here is the answer:

NO, only newer cameras support this (2100 apparently is not a newer one). This issue cannot be resolved by upgrading drivers, it is due to firmware in camera. E100RS and newer does however support this feature.

Finally the tech-guy said it is WELL KNOWN** that using an USB-HUB will in most instances cause download error. He simply said do not use the hub when using the 2100.....

Maybe this will save you from trouble
Cheers

Well I did try to be a bit sneaky.... when I asked if there would be a newer model of 2100, he said there is one mentioning the E100, I tried to misinterprete asked if he said 3100.... he did not recognize that number ;-))

It may cause an error, but on my computer it worked fine with a 7 port USB hub.

I've found that the Pocket Smartmedia Reader is even better and that works on the hub too.

My 2100 works fine on my powered USB hub.

It is possible that those having trouble on a hub are not using the external power supply. A buss powered hub is more likely to see current limiting on the 5V line sometimes at 500mA. The camera may be exceeding this value and causing the hub and laptop driver to go into current limit which is reduced voltage. For those having trouble on buss powered hubs try using the external power supply. Please let us know if this solved any of your problems.

Mine's running off an old Belkin 4-port hub that's running off a 7-port hub. I didn't know there were any limitations, so I just plugged it into the next available slot. One of these days, I'll get around to replacing my card reader that doesn't work with Smart Media larger than 16 meg.

I keep a USB cable plugged into a USB hub on the back of my computer, plug the other end into my 2100, turn on the camera, click on the Camedia USB download Icon on the screen, and it works without a hitch everytime.

Ed,

that is what I used to to with my other digi-cam! And expected to do with my 2100.... apparently my combination motherboard/HUB/drivers/camera combination are not fully compatible. And the tech guy at Olympus did aknowledege it is a known issue, not just affecting me.

I doubt it is due to power restrictions, rather the way Win98 loads the drivers. And rest assured I am 'NOT** the only guy out therer with weard problems on the USB-bus! Usually the best way of stay clear of trouble is to get a multi-root plug-in card, and let every device have its own root.
