MK2 as a hobby?

I am wondering how many people that do not earn their living from
photography bought or plan to buy the MK2.

I hope I'm not the only crazy one :-)

I've started with the Sony707, then got the 10D and now I'm taking
the big step ...

Cheers,
bogdan.
me too
always buy the best
Nikon F2S,F4,F5,D1X.
Now thinking or the 1DS or the mark2

because Nikon the D2H is not good just with 4m Pixel but if the D2X will come at list with 8mp I will take it too

Hey, that's a cool shot. My sister served coffee at a memorial service for Jerry Garcia (she is a member of the church in Tiburon where it was held). Anyway, she brought me a rose from the service, and I have it to this day. Maybe I should dig it out and take a photo.

Funny though, for an amateur, I certainly get DISCRIMINATED against
and TREATED like a pro, when I show up with my gear at events,
while security is busy hassleing ME, all the Pro1, E1, 300D
shooters are merrily clicking away.

Security girl, hassling me at the Dead New Years Show, while I'm
shooting the 70-200/f.28 from the back of the room.

"Hey, you can't shoot that in here".

"And why not"

"Well, that LENS is too BIG".

"Sorry honey, it's the smallest one I have with me right now, but
I'll go put on the "baby one", if you'll walk me up to the STAGE to
shoot".

Dead - 12/31/03 - Oakland Coliseum - 10D/70-200f2.8L IS

Equipment certainly DOES get categorized as "professional", even if
they person pushing the buttons ISN'T.

Robert - that statement was made with tongue firmly in cheek.
That's why I put the little smiley face thingy at the end. And who
is Heifitz? Is he related to Zamphir (the master of the pan flute)?

Howie

why not

i mean there are lots of hobbies that are much more expensive than a MkII. Boats, air planes,...

Actually hobbyists can generally 'afford' it often easier. As a hobbyist your decision is

do i have the money and do i want to spend it.

As a pro you need to have the money and then the investment has to be worth it also.

For me it's more of a hobby than anthing else. I do sell an occasional picture (usually a 4x6) but mostly to firends and members of the soccer club that I'm affiliated with.

It's great not to have the pressure of having to "produce" but at the same time getting a little money for something I love to do. I don't even come close to breaking even! Looking forward to my MKII (hopefully this week) so I can better serve my "clients".

heck ... 1D Mark II is much cheaper than my boating hobby ... damn gas prices anyhow ... lol ... course i use cams for my work and for my play ...

oh, and they're much cheaper than a leaf valeo or a imacon and all the stuff it takes to run one of those ...

I suspect the aggregte number sold to non-pros will easily exceed the number sold to people making a living using it. What do you think?

331 shows and counting. Following the Dead - another expensive hobby. especially when you record AND shoot.

My wife's car tag is : IMIS JER We met at a show in Atlanta 11 years ago (and finally got married last year after going our seperate ways for 10 years).

Everything I own is as a hobby - 1D, 1Ds, 300 2.8, 100-400, 24-70 and a bunch more. It is because I enjoy using the best gear in what ever hobby I am engaged in.

How to pay for it? I am retired and don't have to drive to work anymore. The old car will last another year which will pay for a camera and lens.

But don't spend money you don't have, that is a bad habit to get into:-)

my only expensive hobby. My ham radio addiction is at least as expensive as my photo hobby. Now that I retired from 30 years of corporate flying I may have time to actually learn the craft.

Now, I have to sell my 1D so my wife won't ask why I need two cameras like this.

Canon 1D, Pentax Optio 555, and G-III QL (yes - film)

seems to be a lot of 1D's and 1ds's in the hands of us mere mortals.

Canon's on to a winner there.

Amazing yet are the millions of people yet to switch, those with Pro Nikon and Canon Film bodies who are amateur. I know a lot of these as well.

Buy Canon shares I say!!

One thing about getting the "dream" camera is that once you have it new cameras don't draw ones attention as much. New camera envy just doesn't happen as often when one has their "dream" camera. Back in the film camera days, EOS 1V or Nikon F5, once one had such a beast other film cameras were not that good in comparison. No point throwing money towards something that one may end up upgrading to another body anyways. Why not just get the system/camera that one wants and be done with it in one whack.

So go for the camera that you want, as long as money isn't an issue of course. The Mark II is definitely going to be a camera that will provide great images and also one will not suffer from pixel envy due to its 8mp sensor. We all have our little hobbies that we spend money on. Photography just happens to one for many of us.

Just be sure to get plenty of compact flash storage for the Mark II beast. Would be a shame to have such a beast and not be able to fire off rounds and rounds of images.

Have fun with the camera and enjoy it!! Shoot with it often and the cost will be justified rather quickly.

I make some money from this "hobby" shooting high school sports with a 10D, have ample savings, and still feel some guilt over my impending Mark II purchase.

In the final analysis, we don't really NEED the "bigger, better and faster" gear if we don't do this for a living. However, if you took this line of reasoning too far, you would have no hobbies or you would have to abandon the usual goal of becoming more proficient in a hobby. Better gear can contribute to attaining the goal of better quality photos. The Mark II will help me capture more good sporting moments with the 8.5 fps burst, superior autofocus, and ETTL-2.

It has been said, that "creation is God's hobby." We should have hobbies too as long as we can afford them and it doesn't become a situation where we put the hobby before obligations to others. Sometimes I think about the vast majority of the inhabitants of the world who could never afford a hobby like this. I suppose that's where remembering the less fortunate by giving to some charitable cause comes in. It really all boils down to seeing things in perspective and acting in accordance with that understanding.

this is as crazy as spending 1000.00 on a Kodak 260 2.2mp digital point and shoot. Or 1200.00 on a Kodak DC4800 3.3mp digital point and shoot. Or even 2200.00 on an Olympus E-10 4mp point and shoot digital. So considering what this beauty is capable of and will do, 4500.00 seems more reasonable to me than the other purchases I've made. Plus, since I've been shooting canon film for several years, and the Drebel since last October, I have a good start in lens. So I'm ready and waiting!

Yes its just a hobby and I am upgrading fra 10D.
Looking for lower noise, faster and better A. To have 8 fps is also nice.
2 of my sons play Soccer and Handball.

spent a lot of money on lenses 17-40 + 24-70 + 70-200 2.8 IS the last 6 months. Now I am going for the "ultimate" camera (so far)...
