Hi all,

Just a few bird shots from my Florida trip. I'm going to have to get a book on birds so I can start IDing these guys.

this guy was just sitting on the rock for more than 10 minutes with his wings spread (drying them?)

This was a lucky shot. I never thought i would get a decent shot of one so little in flight

rock sitting seems to the thing to do

this one was just hopping around the rocks along the shore

after getting soaked he dried off in a tree

Nice shots and cool series. It's interesting to see "unusual" birds (Never been to FL). Hope you do get that bird book :)

Thanks for sharing.

Hi Jill,

Thanks for your response. There are jsut so many birds down there I will definitely have to educate myself a bit.

Richard,

I'll pick up one of Sibley's books on my next trip to Barnes & Noble.

I keep returning to these pictures. Great shots, esp. the small bird. You call it lucky, I would say excellent and outstanding. Difficult to catch.

And the other one was not drying his wings. He was waiting for you to shoot. "Will he ever shoot, I can't freeze any longer", hehe.

Cheers,
Adrian

Olga,

Thanks for the kind words. I'm getting a tad excited at the new photo ops I will have down in Florida.

Hi Harry, really nice shots. Harry there's a wonderful bird book called "Florida Birds" which is no longer printed but I was able to buy it used at Amazon.com for $6.50 plus s&h. The authors are Herbert Kale and David Maehr and it only shows Florida birds, makes it much easier to find. Your first picture is an anhinga. dickb

Well, I'll give your ID a try, or at least get you in the ballpark. I'm no expert, especailly since I can rattle off some east coast birds or I should say north east birds, but these California birds and trees and flowers have me stumped most of the time.

This is probably a cormorant (Cormorants have hooked bills, and shorter tails and necks). Ah, let me take that back, it's probably an anhinga (Anhinga has a long, pointed bill and a much longer tail.)

This looks like a gull or tern. I couldn't quite find a match.

This might be a small kingfisher type of bird.

My google search showed this site. Only problem is the thumbnails are really really tiny, not good for old eyes, and I'm nearsited! But you can keep on clicking to get a decent view.

Of course if you don't even know where to start it's difficult. Somewhere there's gotta be a simple general species site -- these are gulls, these are terns, etc.

I'm gonna try a few more.

hey Adrian,

These were taken with my D100 and my new 80-400 lens. I'm very happy with the lens as it gave me the reach I needed for these shots. Its big drawback is the slow AF so I was amazed that i was able to get the in-flight shot of the small bird as it was moving fairly fast. Slow moving birds like pelicans are no problem but I didn't expect to catch this one.

Harry;

I have to take another look. But at first I thought it was a cormorant. But I seen the Anhinga in a book; And that looks more like what you photographed.
