Beware B&H new shipping methods!!!

So, after reading all this thread, I need a list of alternatives to buy from. If B&W and Adorama (ny choices in past) both use the new plastic pillows then who still uses the peanuts? I"ve had problems also with the new plastic air bags. The items slip and slide all around in the box and the pillows don't secure them or protect them...very flimsy and not protective for any camera equipment.
thanks for any suggestions for alternatives,
GeeJay
Here's my "longer" version of problems with B&H shipping....

I ordered a lens last November and it got real crappy packaging,
but no damage to the lens...I think?

The posts your reading now, started back in Feb 04 and a B&H
fellow, Henry Posner, had been following the posts and finally
assured us that the packaging would get better. Based on his
responses, I ordered another lens last week and still got crappy
packaging. So based on the poor packaging combined with horrible
UPS handling, I'm pretty much finished both of them when ever
possible.

I won't even start to tell you about the $3000.00 guitar UPS
destroyed, they ate that one :-)

GeeJay,

I've grown to really like Calumet Photo (www.calumetphoto.com). The biggest thing I've ordered from them so far is a SB-800, and it not only shipped the same day I ordered it (and I placed my order at 2pm), but was packed very well in a sturdy box and peanuts. Calumet also ships FedEx, UPS and US Postal Service.

Personally, I've had hit or miss results with B&H packaging, which leads me to think it may be more due to UPS handling then anything else. My D70 was packed wonderfully, as were all my previous orders for some miscellaneous items. However, I ordered a lowepro backpack and monopod earlier in the week and the entire box was crushed to the point that the B&H anti-tamper tape was totally destroyed, it looked like someone at UPS had stuck some plain old packing tape over it to keep the box together. There was adequate padding inside the box. I'm confident that the box didn't leave the warehouse looking that way.

Aside from that, when UPS delivered my D70, they dropped it on the front porch and forged my signature as it was a signature required package (and in the process spelled my last name wrong). I believe that most of the shipping problems are reflective of UPS rather then B&H, but even still, I won't be doing any more business with B&H until they change shipping companies. I'd much rather pay a few dollars extra and NOT have UPS forge my signature on a $1300 package.

My last two orders from B&H have been tightly packed in good boxes with peanuts.

They weren't any expensive gear either, just a lot of large and medium format film, negative protectors, etc.

That was about a month ago.

If you pick it up in NY, you have to pay the NY tax.

The last couple of orders I placed with B&H were well packaged. BTW, the problem discussed in this thread is only for items shipped from their Brooklyn warehouse. If you know something is stocked in their Manhattan store (I have no idea how to tell) there's no worry.

If this problem is stll going on, I'd expect Henry and his boss to take another butt-kicking trip to Brooklyn.

Hi all,

FYI...

I've ordered equipment from B&H in New York for 3 years now. Always
had great service. Packages were always packaged with styrofoam
peanuts "surrounding" the product so as to cushion the impact of
forces on the box.

EXCEPT in the last three weeks, I've had 3 separate orders all
delivered in totally PATHETIC condition...

All of my recent shipments used some plastic air bags placed on TOP
of the product, BUT on the BOTTOM of the box it was ONLY lined with
a measly quarter inch of that skinny little air bubble strip!!!

Consequently, my $800 Nikon 80-200 lens was literally shaking in
the box as I held it in my hands. And when I opened the package,
the Nikon box was so battered that it literally FELL APART in my
hands! The glued flaps that keep the Nikon box together had been
completely come undone.

If this were a one-time occurance, I might understand, but this has
now happened 3 times on 3 shipments of expensive lens.

They're simply throwing some air bags on top of the box, but
leaving the SIDES and BOTTOM virtually exposed to impact.

I'm very disgusted with this. Has anyone experienced RECENT
problems of this nature?

--Shakmatay
All they could say was it UPS fault. I never in 10 shipments even had a damaged box when they used the peanuts.

Let's try B&H's Fed Ex shipping option. I'm going to do that and I'll let you know how the package looks when it arrives with lense inside , I hope in good shape.

Good luck!

I wish I'd taken a few pictures as I opened my package but it looked OK on the outside.

I might even file a BBB complaint against them. That
usually gets attention.
While most reputable business prefer to do business above-board and respond reasonably to customer complaints, the BBB is a toothless organization that has little-to-no effect in the real world.

For the record, B&H is my first option -- always. Henry's participation in this forum is one reason, and their track record with me is another.

I just received a new 70-200/VR + SB800 and, under separate order, a new Nikkor 200/4 Micro from them just this past week. Both were exceptionally well packaged and arrived precisely when the salesperson said they would.

For Henry -- my email for B&H orders is: bgetchel [at] hotmail [dot] com.

Check it out. I've spent many thousands there in the past year alone.

Things that make you go, hmmmm...

I just received a D2H from B&H and it was packaged really poorly. There wasn't any packaging at all on one of the sides. Kind of a bummer that I spent $3200 on a camera and they couldn't spend an extra 2 cents on shipping it.

Dustin,

That makes me furious to hear that your pricey camera was shipped like that. I started this thread over 2 months ago. It's a shame they've decided not to go back to the peanut packing.

I really like dealing with them, but now I will only purchase Non-Fragile items from them.

Just received a 70-200VR from B&H today. Same problem with the
packing. Just a few airbags and the Nikon lens box floating around,
poorly protected. Good thing Nikon packs the lens in a secure
manner. One side of the Nokin lens box was against the side of the
shipping box. Good grief guys this is a $1600 dollar lens. Can't
you throw in some styrofoam peanuts and center the lens box in the
shipping box? I have bought all my gear from B&H but these sort of
shipping methods warrant concern.

R. Hodge
I received my 85mm/1.4 The same way.The nikon box placed in a larger box with no packing. When I picked it up I was worried it was damaged, because the nikon box had room to move around in the larger box. It's a good thing that nikon packs the lense in a styrafoam mold.

Yep it stinks!!!! I ordered $3700.00 worth last tuesday, had it sent over night for $113.00 to Tennessee. They have not changed their packing at all!!! Two lens, one $1200.00+ and the other $1600.00+, new tripod and couple other goodies. The main box they put this in was fine when it got here but the items inside could move & shake around at will. I'm gona send it all back and tell them what they can do with their so called caring. Henry Posner you need not come back on here and tell us some more bull about B&H caring as its been back in Feb that you put a post on this topic and told us it was taken care of. I placed a $700.00+ order last month that was shipped this way and now a $3700.00+ order this month still shipped the same way. If B&H cared , why is our high price stuff we work so hard to pay for, treated like garbage?????? Thanks for nothing!!!

Joe

P.S. Who is this other seller talked about in this post that does good with packing. How do I get in touch with them? As soon as I get credit from B&H i'll have a few thousand to spend with someone else.

Henrys.com = their method of packaging is top notch. I have ordered several lens cases from them and they package them equally as well as high priced items. The use shredded cardboard and pack items so there is no air space...absolutely the best I have ever seen. Shipping is a little slow because they are coming out of Canada...but they communicate well and let you know when your item went out. Also, they routinely require a signature to receive the item. Prices tend to be a little more than stateside...but I also have never tried calling them to see if they would match B&H or Adorama's prices.

Yep that is the one I've heard a little about (Adorama). Are they in the U.S. so I 'll have U.S. warranty for my lens ? And what can some of you that have bought from them tell me ? Thanks

In the future.... before I make any purchase of items that can be easily damaged due to poor packaging (lenses, bodys and so on) I'm going to call the store and ask them about their shipping methods. I want a contact name and a verbal guarantee that my order will be handled properly. I will NEVER use UPS to ship theses items.

I don't want some idiot putting my new $4000.00 D2X ;-) in a box with one air-bag then another idiot thowing it from a conveyor into a big brown truck.

Wondering cos it was listed as an option upon checkout. I don't mind paying more for peace of mind. Anyone with positive experience for Fedex recently with B&H?

Now I'm realy mad!!!! The camera body I bought from B&H last month stoped working today and I'm in the middle of a advanced photography course at Jackson State. These people will be getting a call first thing in the morning. I advise no one to buy from them till you here from several consumers and not one of their own people that things are corrected. Thanks again B&H!!!
