Hi guys,

today I had the chance to test my 300D in a side by side comparison with a D70 (I ordered a 10D long time ago and still waiting..... so the local shop dealer proposed a D70 trial just in case.......).

My current equipment is 300D with kit lens (used only 5 minutes the first day I bought the camera!); 20-35 EF USM 3,5-4,5; 28-135 IS EF USM 3,5-5,6; 100-300 EF USM 4,5-5,6.

I must admit I was qute excited because I was a really happy owner for almost two years of a Nikon Coolpix 5700 (my first digital camera) but............
What a disappointment!

First approach with the camera was really nice.... Nice construction (better than 300D), better controls (as you already know, more and better customizable), in three words; much professional feeling.

At that point I starded thinking to cancel my order for the 10D, go with the Nikon and sell all my lenses to buy some new one for the D70.

But then I started shooting and changed my mind immediately after I saw the results: Nikon D70 image quality is really far from what I get from my 300D !!!!

I can assure you I tested the two cameras under several different situations and I had always the same results: D70 images are far too much noisy if compared to 300D quality.

Believe me, if you can do a side by side comparison with a D70, you will be more than happy to own a 300D, even if silver plastic bodied.

Please note: it's just just my personal opinion but the silky smooth quality of noise free iso 200 or 400 you can get from the 300D sensor is something that is hardly reachable with the D70 one.

I knew that this would happen. CCD vs CMOS. CMOS always wins!

Thank you for your personal review with both cameras. I've always thought that when I looked at the images displayed on the Nikon forum, I felt that the images were on average flatter and less contrast than what I seem from Canon images. I am still happy with the results I get from my Rebel. Could you post some comparison pics of both photo images from each camera?

The problem is that I have no pics on line (nor a web site):
Is that the only way to post images in this forum?

Hi paul,

I was reading the review of all lower priced dslr's in Practical Photography today whilst in tesco's.The camera they had down as the overall best value was the 10D. No contest there.However, when they came to the D70 which they gave the buy it award or whatever they called it, they were more focused on what it could do as regards functions than image quality.They even stated that there was more noise with the D70 than the 300D and seemed to bypass completely the iso differential.

It just seems strange that the reviewers are seemingly blinded by what the D70 can do as opposed to how well it actually does it.I am glad to hear you have found the 300D has superior image quality, we can all now rest assured that we made the right choice and get on with what we all do well, some better than others...lol.....taking pix

The Nikon might be faster but I value image quality as the number 1 criteria. The 300D isn't slow either so why buy by the Nikon if the images are noisy?

Thank you for the tip Blue Breeze,

I have just signed in in photobucket and I promise I will post some sample pictures tomorrow (now in Italy is one o' clock a.m. and I am a bit tired).

Hi,

One very strange thing with the D70 is the Moiré maze artifact pattern (it doesn't happen with 300D).

You can see samples on dpreview test :

D70 ->

300D ->

One guy seem to confirm that very hardely:
D70 -> http://www.photim.net/nci/photo.php3?Code=20040326212718muleta&O=8
300D -> http://www.photim.net/nci/photo.php3?Code=20040326212718muleta&O=6

Quit unbearable, isn't it ?

Before buying my DReb last fall I grew very frustrated with the digital camera reviews I found on-line. Most reviewers seemed to rate them as tech toys, not as cameras. Even the ones who gave some weight to image quality seems to have little knowledge of ergonomics or professional photography.

I think the D70 is a great camera, but I am highly critical of reviews that do not realise the important of ISOs below 200, wired remotes, and noise/moire-free images. If you need one of these in your photography the D70 goes from "great deal" to "expensive paperweight". Same goes for the DReb- its a great camera if you can live with its feature set, its a waste of money otherwise.

Lucky for me, I've got both! When (if) I ever need another camera body, a MkII say, I will have it coated silver. And I also DISagree that the D70 is better built. My 300D has a metal chassis behind the polycarb....the D70 is 100% polycarb. All that said, it's only about the pictures and many are reporting your experience. One Nikon wonk embarrassed himself in a national photography publication when he called Canon images "unrealistically noise-free." Obviously someone with cataracts or macular degeneration.

I print mostly 20x30cm on matt paper and I can assure you there is a HUGE difference between a D300 noise free image and a D70 one (tried yesterday with my 1,5 yrs old daughter pics), but of course if you print 10x15 cm. or even smaller sizes yuou will hardly notice the difference (in this case a 3 megs p&s camera will perfectly fit your needs).
