1D MkII Photos Are Definitely Soft !!!

Hi Allen,

I came across this thread somewhere else on the forum that explains a very simple focusing test. Why not try it out? At least you will know soon enough whether the Mark 2 is ballparking it correctly.

Hello Jonathan,

thank you for your reply, thank you also Teski.

I agree with you that it is early days, and I loathe to give up
without good reason, so I am of course going to go on taking shots
all week end.

It is not so much the sharpness or lack of, I can deal with that in
post processing, it is the accuracy of focus that worries me.

Yeah right. And compare it to the res charts of a 1Ds and a 1D on the same website.

The 1Ds isn't sharper either. The 1D is a tiny bit sharper, but also looks like some kind of sharpening was already applied (maybe in-camera).

I would like to mention one more thing. Last night I was playing
with the MK2 with the 550ex on it. In one shot only, I got a bright
white spot, as if the flash had reflected on something. I checked
for the spot on the wall after I saw it in PS, but there was
nothing there which would cause this to appear. I have no idea what

Do you have a filter on the lens. Sometimes you can get multiple reflections between the plain surface of the sensor and a filter which gives a hot spot. That's why the protective glass at the front of lenses such as the 300/2.8 is curved but with zero optical power.

...You just sneaked round and shot your neighbours car, right? :)

You had to sell your Merc. to get the MK.II

I'd complain to comcast tech support
I know for a fact others on comcast can access our servers ....

If so, what sharpness settings did you use, and what post-processing did you use?

There has been a lot of talk about the camera only really being sharp when you shoot in RAW, but that may be due to in-camera settings.

I'd also be curious to know if you can tell us any more about what the hassles were with the software, although of course I will understand if that is not possible.
Thanks.

An old saying applies here:
"It is a poor craftsman that blames his tools for a bad job"

My father told me this more years ago than I care to remember and I never forgot it.

Once we all get past the learning curve with the new MK2 I am confident most attitudes about sharpness will alter. I printed the shot of Paul Pope's Mercedes and I am satisfied he knows how to use his tools. No pun intended.

As a result, I will manage to get a MK2 just as many of you will also. Just wish the darn thing would get here!

I have been now shooting for two days with Canon 1D MkII and
confirm that the photos are significantly softer than from number
of other Canon DSLRs. I owe 1Ds, 300D and have been using D30, D60
and 10D in the past. I compare softness of images from 1D MkII to
those from early D30. Yes... it appears to me that in tradeoff of
some incredible smoothing (1D MkII images are silky smooth) the
overall sharpness is compromised.

For your information, I use "L " lenses only, mostly primes, take
pictures in RAW format using Adobe RGB colour space and process
them with quality RAW converters - C1 Pro DSLR being my number one
choice. At present C1Pro DSLR does not support 1D MkII hence for
the images shot in past two days I used Canon's Digital Photo
Professional that came with the camera and as of today Adobe Camera
Raw 2.2

There is an option in 1D MkII to set the level of internal
sharpening. For the moment I have this sharpening switched off.

I must admit that I am bit concerned about softness of 1D MkII
images, as sharpening them in Photoshop does not bring the same
result I used to get from 1Ds or even 300D. Canon 300D images
appear to me much crisper than those of 1D MkII.

Sh*ty car ; ))

Its properly taken examples like this that we need to look at.

As i have said before, "if the camera is capable of one quality image, its capable of at least 200,000 more"!
