I Recently acquired Mr. iNova's eBook. I bought it thinking "This will be a waste of time/money". I am a professional photographer (Not to imply that I'm "All That", simply to denote that I make a living doing it.) I've been shooting for over 13 years, and working in PhotoShop Since Ver 4.0 ( 1997). Anyway, all that to say this. As expected, the mass content of the book was targeted for a range of beginner -> to -> prosumer and although I didn't learn anything new, it never hurts to review these tried and true basics. But, here's where I was surprised. When reading the contents of the PS actions included (read iNovaFX filters), I thought to myself, "yeah I can do all that." But the route from A-> B I would have chosen was very different in some cases. I'm not afraid to admit I did learn quite a few new PhotoShop "tricks" to add to my bag. To me, the PS Actions alone are well worth the $$, and Mr. iNova was nice enough to throw an eBook with my Actions for free. ;-)

To throw in a quick disclaimer, I do not personally know Mr. iNova. Nor was I compensated or propositioned for these comments. I simply wanted to pass on my impressions to the group.

Job well done Peter.--

I'm right with you WayneJ, I hesitated ordering the book for the same reason. On receiving it, I even delayed getting into it for that reason. True, as you noted, 99% of the ebook I already knew and was doing. But guess what? I found one thing, ONE THING that Mr. iNova pointed out concerning Levels that I was not using. Adding it to my bag of tricks has saved me much time and made my results immeasurably more pleasing, especially in mixed lighting conditions. For that one tidbit alone, I have many times paid for the book.

Peter, how do you maintain a measure of humility with all this gushing? Keep up the good work.

Brad.

one shoots film and does scans and prints later on. Most of the processing concepts are applicable.

I also found the basics to be a general review, that of course just reinforces your knowledge base, but when I got to looking into the actions I found the real treasure trove of the e-book. These are where the real info lies and altho it may be tedious for some to analyze these actions it is well worth the effort. Thank you Peter for you contribution to our continuing photographic education.

I'm very depressed. None of my hats will fit me any more and my wife keeps saying things like, "keep that thing on your own pillow. Ouch!"

I'm glad that your experiences parallel my own. The real thing will always continue to be the real thing in spite of superstitions, miss-think, rumors or coincidence. When writing the eBook I tried to stay aware of the fact that every reader is coming from a different place even though the "conversation" is peer to peer. For the advanced photographer it couldn't help but cover a lot of common ground. For the inquisitive beginner, it might look like a daunting network of new ideas so making them connect and/or make internal sense was the goal.

It's heartening to hear that the iNovaFX Filters have an audience of analytical users, too. If you guys (gender neutral) have ideas, challenges, etc. I'm up for it. Did you download your 35mm film frames yet? Older breaking news over at http://www.digitalsecrets.net

The new "Adobe PhotoShop Elements" software is designed to work with all Photoshop plug-ins that support RGB images.

Does this mean that most (all?) of the plug-ins included with the ebook will also work with "Elements"?

Photoshop Elements does not include all the plug-ins and internal engines that run the full version of Photoshop. Photoshop's "filters" includes things that are not found in the plug-ins folder, 77 plug-ins vs. 95 "filters".

PSE doesn't have the marvelously versatile Curves window, for instance. So it contains a subset of PS6 parts. iNovaFX filters weren't written originally for PSE, obviously, and that means many of the iNovaFX filters won't simply drop into PSE and work there.

But PSE is very capable. It doesn't write the Actions but executes them. PS6 writes them for PSE. When I have both up and running on my computer at the same time, then the approaches that work cross-program can be seen.

Where are the real limits? Dunno. But add a "yet" to that.

Will it do everything? No. Will it do a lot? Oh, yeah. Will there be PSE iNovaFX Filters that perform the unexpectedly coo? Bet on it. And the upgrades will be low bucks to current owners.

Peter,

Please don't forget those of us who use the older (v5.0) versions of Photoshop when you write or upgrade your plug-ins.

I've downloaded the film frames but they do not all run. I get an error message "No Pixels selected". I'm not at the right computer at the moment so cannot check at which point this happens.

Also what does Photoshop mean when it says "Set not Available" whilst running a plug-in?

Great Book - Thanks

Peter Brooks
