I am considering switching to the eos 10d from the eos 3. I would like some feedback from anyone who has made the switch themselves.
Is it worth taking the plunge?

Hi,

I have both of the bodies you're talking about, and I did not touch my EOS 3 since I have my 10D for 3.5 months..

However, I do miss it when I need to take a wide angle shot.

I never had any occasion that I needed spot metering. I use partial spot metering, and perform exposure correction if needed during post-processing.

Regards,

I switched from the EOS 3 to the 300D (similar switch). With a 4Gb Microdrive I'm free of the limitations of film and its costs. I love having all of the shooting data with each shot - down to which lens and what focal length zooms were set to.

The only thing I miss (and am still sore about considering the 300D cost as much as the 3) is the 45 point area AF, since using the 3 7-points seems like a huge compromise and I have to keep reminding myelf to make sure that one of the points covers something worth focusing on.

Other than that I have no regrets and feel this is a very exciting time for photographers. It just seems to me now that lens technology is lagging and that despite Canons range a lot of the models are very old technology - especially the primes.

I went the other way was an Olympus 35 user bought the 10D and then
got a good bit of Canon glass so I bought the EOS3 body to have a
film body for the lens....I have had the film body a year now and
have shot three rolls of film...wish I had never bought the body and
got a differant lens instead...

Why switch? I use both and I think they compliment each other.

Actually thats similar to how I did things. I bought my 10D in december and just a couple of weeks ago I picked up the EOS 3 and I love using both. I love the wide angle I am able to get with my existing lenses considering the 1.6x factor of the 10D a 28mm on the film cam gives allot of view. I carry both cams in my canon bag with a 28-135 IS on the 10D at all times and the EOS 3 has a 75-300 IS on it and when I need or want the wider angle pics I swap the lenses but at least 2 cams are ready at all times.

I made the switch after I'd had a 300d for 6 months. I now have a 10d [and the 300d].

What I miss most is the multi-spot metering. In churches with stain glass windows I've had to change the way I meter. Nothing much else comes to mind. Don't miss the 8 frames a second [had the winder] but something faster than 3ish with the 10d would be nice.

Regards.

Woodie.

"worth" is a very subjective thing... if you make your momney from photography, then yes. if you like shooting without limitations of 36 frames, then yes. If you like shooting slides like me, and doing B&W prints in the dark room like me, you may face a problem getting rid of the film body entirely. I for one am the happy owner of both a D30 and an EOS3. for 3 months I owned a 10D and loved it, but financial setbacks forced me to go back to my beloved D30' and I haven't regretted it. I will probably never buy a single roll of 35mm Color Negative, but I still go back to my 3 for B&W and slides and love every second. with the few color negatives I still have in the fridge I occasionally shoot with my old trusty Rebel G, where I need to go light and carefree (long hikes where the camera may suffer bumps and water if I'm not careful, so I prefer to lose an old cheap body - though this hasn't happend so far).

as for 45 focus points - it's cute but I do fine without, I often lock my EOS3 into middle focus anyway. Spot meter? the histogram is a MUCH better tool not to mention instant review... you will not miss that either. the 3 is however more rugged, does better with dark situations and a few other features as porpper for its caliber, but that's hardly a comparison - a DSLR and an SLR are too different beasts. I love them both and still use them a lot.
