hi all,

As more and more on this forum seems to have bought the P600, I would like to take the opportunity to discuss the vignetting issues I am experiencing.

Specifically, if you put the camera to full WIDE, you will see at

f2.8: Obvious dark patches at top left and right of the image
f3.7-4: Not that obvious dark patches
f5.0; No dark patches at all

If you zoom in the camera, the dark patches seems to go away.

My questions are these:

1. Can this vignettting problem be fixed by a firmware upgrade from Casio or is it a pure lens issue?

2. How serious is the vignetting compared to cameras around it's class like the G5 or Sony DSC-V1?

3. Is this a common problem across advanced digital compacts?

4. How do you touch up in Photoshop Elements 2?

5. Does this problem "crippled" the camera and cause in your opinion, the Image Quality Rating to change from "Great" to "Bad"?

BTW, anyone knows whether DP Review will review the camera?

Thanks,
Lesade

1. Can this vignettting problem be fixed by a firmware upgrade from
Casio or is it a pure lens issue?
I think it's a lens issue. Theoretically, it can be minimized in camera by some advanced image processing; but I doubt camera's CPU is capable of such task, even if Casio were willing to patch the firmware to address this problem (which is also unlikely, in my opinion).
2. How serious is the vignetting compared to cameras around it's
class like the G5 or Sony DSC-V1?
I can only compare it with other compact cameras I previously owned, namely Canon s110 and Canon s40. P600 is defininely worst of them in this regard.
5. Does this problem "crippled" the camera and cause in your
opinion, the Image Quality Rating to change from "Great" to "Bad"?
To me, it looks like pretty serious flaw ("forgivable", because I can almost get rid of it in Photoshop), but I think this camera generously compensates for this flaw. Though lens definitely has issues, it's also pretty sharp and zooming range is very good. Plus, other camera's features (and just a sheer number of them) are currently unmatched by others.

I don't regret buying it... yet :)

I have to agree with fGene here. I am thinking about buying a P600 and from what I have seen the vignetting issue is a problem but PS will all but eliminate it. Also, i don't think it will be as noticeable in most photos as it is on landscapes or architecture with sky.

Just some images for comparison:

Casio EX-P600 aperture F4.0 focal length 7mm (wide):

Canon S50 aperture F4.0 focal length 7mm (wide):

Canon S50 aperture F3.2 focal length 7mm (wide): (wide): http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_s50-review/IMG_00017.JPG

The Casio picture in the upper corners (when rotated for normal view) in the sky clearly shows vignetting, while in the Canon pictures vignetting is almost invisible.

I've never had any vignetting with my 550, and haven't read about that on the Pentax forum either. I presume the 555 is the same.

Most small digital cameras will vignette with a wide open aperture.
This was taken with my Canon A80 today. Notice the upper corners.

I just spoke with Casio about this. Excuse my lack of in-depth photography knowledge, but, they recommended to change the metering to "Multi" in the menu options. I'm not sure if that would work, as I'm just a beginner, with a fast P600, that had to look up the word vignetting. :)

Your exposure doesn't cause vignetting. It is a hardware issue. It might make it show up more though.
