this was amazing... today i found and bought an SB-22s flash to use on my CP990, i was hesitant to pay a heavy price tag for the SB-28 since much of it's features are not used bythe CP990 and did not want to o for the SB-22 since i could not bounce light - no swivel head, but guess what ? now the Sb-22s has a swivel head with a built-in optional diffuser [wideangle] really cool, the price was decent [i think Us$ 143] hope this interests many of u who where waiting for such a unit !

I'm very happy too with my SB-22s. I think it works great when bouncing in the ceiling. The flesh tones seem perfect aswell.

This picture is taken in a hospital room where the ceiling is fairly high up (about 5-6 meters) and I used the flash to bounce in the ceiling:

You'll enjoy your SB-22s, I've had one for a month now and am very pleased with it. I paid $145 for it at B&H Photo so you beat my price by $2. Like you I was looking for a reasonably priced speedlight with bounce capabilities when I stumbled on to the SB-22s. It was actually far more than I wanted to pay but I just didn't want to take the chance of damaging my 990 with an off brand flash although that many folks use them without any problem. I had a hard time finding the AS-E900 flash adapter but I also located that at B&H Photo. It cost an arm and a leg ($40) but I find all of Nikon's accessories to be quite expensive.

very natural shot, quite impressive ! G;ad to see others happy with the unit... check this out i think that is such a smart idea i just stumbeled across it, i was always keen to setup multiple flash [slave setup] but did not want to use the CP990 flash as a part of that setup, this smart man came up with a simple and logical solution !!! interesting.... :)

BOB, Intresting that u brought up the topic, NIKON accs are very expensive... i was in the same position quite skeptical about using non-NIKON accs [fear of damaging the 990!] i think i will run out an buy the something900 bracket so i can use the flash! did u check out the link i posted last with the slave units ? smart way to save... each of his slaves cost him $20 !! funnu huh ? and no fear of cam damage !!! well....

Oh boy...had I only known that. I bought the SB22 and I really miss the swivel. Now you have the perfect flash for the 990!

WEnt to your link and under "Weaknesses" says, "Doesn't rotate"...I don't see any swivel on it. I'm confused.

Hey Isabel,

The cool thing about this flash is the fact that only the tip of the flash [literally the part that flashes is what flips up in degrees along with the cool built in (optional to use diffuser) as for the rotation i believe they are refering to vertical spin as opposed to horizontal(what u need to bounce - usually off a ceiling ({but not always!}) Hope that clears your confusion ;)

I've been using the sb22s for a couple of months and am also very pleased with it. A neat trick I discovered is you can attach a bounce card by simply cutting out a small piece of card and slipping it in the crack between the swivel and the flash while the wideangle diffuser is on. Works great.

I love my SB22 on my 950. Works well, though I often use it hand-held without the bracket, which really doesn't sit very flat on the 950

Steve
If there is anything said in this string that does NOT apply to the
950 also?

B&H is a well known and respectred company, but I did a search for other SB-22s prices and found two:

http://www.expresscameras.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=SB-22S Prices are: $129.95* (Import-limited warranty) & $159.95 (U.S. price-standard Nikon warranty)

http://www.hotbuyselectronics.com/item_detail.asp?item_id=1193 . Price quoted is $114.98, without mention of warranty (I'll phone them on Monday)

Only $15 more at B&H who is probably the safest buy though.

BTW, Neither of the other two companies are listed in http://www.resellerratings.com/ whereas B&H is rated a 6.3 out of a possible 7.0 (max.)

I have an SB22 (without the S) and it "swivels" too according to your definition. Most flashes have tops that will tilt up to bounce. I interpret swivel to mean it goes side to side. For a short while I had a Sunpak 433D which does swivel side to side, but I found it difficult to use since it did not squelch the flash enough at closer range and I didn't want to bother with the filters (which I also bought). I found I was spending too much time trying to adjust exposures. I just love the SB22. I do have a ball and socket adapter with which I can turn the flash to bounce off the ceiling in portrait mode...BUT it places too much strain on the short PC cord, so I don't use it....I know I can get a Nikon cord that is about 5 feet long, but don't really want to tote around all that cord! My reason for going digital, besides immediacy, was to go light!!!

The SB-22S has always had a bounce head.

I love mine--much better than the cheap Sunpack it replaced. One thing I find, though, is that TTL on the 950 tends to underexpose bounce shots. I don't know if it's just my camera or what. What I do is leave the camera on TTL, but select the second or third most powerful manual setting on the flash. It works well about 95% of the time.

I went and had a quick look at the flash.
It appears to be a nice unit.
Can anyone tell me if the Focus Assist light works with the CP990?
(I would expect it not to but I would be pleasantly suprised if it does)
