soft focus - for the uninitiated/pros

hey-ya:

i'm totally excited about this new effect i discovered here on stf. if you haven't tried adding a soft-focus to your portraits in post you are missing out.

i used these instructions to get the effect.

There is also a filter from autofx that you can use, but i believe it's much better to learn how to do this sort of stuff on your own. I think you'll get more control manually instead of w/ a filter.

for those of you who know all about this, is there anything i could've done better?

I'm no pro, but I think the highlights are blown out. You could maybe tone those down and then apply the soft filter effect. Also, I don't think it suits too well with this picture...

I think if you used the eraser tool on certain areas it might look better...set it to 20% and use several passes.

yeah... i see what you mean about the highlight areas. i can work on that. i had second thoughts about it too, but didn't quite know how to fix it. guess i hoped it wouldn't look that bad.
