I will buy EOS-300D or Nikon D70.

I mostly shoot outdoors and dont use a flash much. I would like to have good color, sharp/crisp images and be able to capture action shots outdoors in full/semi auto mode.

My plans are not to buy any more lenses in the near future. I will use the camera as if it had a fixed lens. My girlfriend have to be able to take very good shots outdoors without much hassle. She doesnt know anything about cameras.

I dont like post processing.

Witch one should i choose?

Thanks

Neither. A DSLR is not for you. And, if you looked at printed output from both cameras of the same shot, you most probably could never tell the difference.

I've responded in the Nikon D70 forum - see there. But basically, I reckon you might be happiest with the 300D, or a high-end point and shoot.

I agree; the Canon Pro 1 or Nikon 8700 might be better choices.

.. you will not buy any additional lenses... We'll see :) That was my starting point (with my 24mm wide and 70-300 zoom already in hand) before I have spent $1000 on new lenses.

I would say a Powershot G5 or Pro with L lens.

DSLR is no good to you if you

1> don't like to post process (isn't this 50% of the fun?)
2> wan't hassle free P&S shots
3> don't want to buy other lenses

I had an EOS 50e previously and thought I wouldnt buy other lenses (I had a 75-300, 28-80 and the kit 18-55)...I am now upgrading my old Sigma 75-300 for the APo 70-300 and have on order a 50mm f1.8...after that I'm not sure I will buy more...but hell...I probably will!

Happy shooting

=)

As others have mentioned you don't seem to intend to use most of the benefits that a DSLR could give you (interchangeable lenses, creative control of DOF etc) so it wouldn't seem to be worth your while spending the extra over an all-in-one from your description of your intended use.

From test shots I have seen the Minolta A2 comes close in picture quality under good lighting circumstances. If you really want your girlfriend to be able to take good shots without going through a learning curve you cannot go for the 300D or D70. Besides she will probably find these camera's way too large.

If you don't mind a bit of a hassle and 5 minutes of explaining things to your girlfriend the 300D can be handled, except maybe for its size. Basically what you do is the following: Create a mode with contrast 0, saturation +1, sharpness +1. (The standard parameter 1 has contrast +1 which reduces the available dynamic range.) Use either the P or A-DEP setting. Set the camera to review+info so that you always get the histogram. Learn to use the AV+ - setting with the scroll wheel. Look at the histogram after taking a picture. If too dark or too bright change the AV+ - setting and take the picture again. If you can deal with this bit of a hassle you can use the 300D mostly as a point and shoot.

The D70 will not be easier to use for your girlfriend. A dslr is not a p&s but I find I can use the 300D almost as a p&s. Cannot comment on the D70 as I never tried to handle one.

The other thing to consider is the price difference. The 300D is cheaper and comes with Photoshop Elements. The D70 kit is at least $200 more expensive than the 300D kit and this is without Photoshop. The D70 kit maybe just overdone for you. I think it is overdone for me, but I'm also convinced I would have been unhappy with "less", like an A2 or Pro1.

none! both are too complicated and you would be better off with a point and shoot. both require post-processing in order to be at their best.

beside..using it as a fixed lens camera is a waste to my opinion.

Rickard,

Try the Canon G5 or Sony V1, they would do an excellent postprocessing work for you.

Only after starting to be annoyed by their limitations - if ever! - think about some DSLRs.

I work now with both Rebell and d70, I guess I will resign the Rebell gear but only due to my personal needs. It is probably better for a beginner too.

Dubya

NO on the pro1. it is reported to be very slow in focusing. very frustrating as reported by those who shoot action. they all have to workaround the problem with pre-focusing. most point and shoots have worse shutter lag and slower focusing. I LOVE my s45 but an slr would be better suited to action shots.

the D70 has an instant startup time unlike the rebel.. if this is not important for your action shots, the rebel is cheaper (wait a few months. it will be even cheaper) and a very respectable camera !.

Wellcome to Canon camp !

If You feel You like one of those: D70 or 300D, we stay here. Can You give up little of Your principals, maybe think photo will be Your hobby, you maybe will learn little more abaut it. Even buy a book of photo processing in computer. I should say, there is a quality difference between these and others which have been recommended.

I like my Canon very much and can warmly recomment it to anybody, even Nikon maybe have little better feathers on paper. Jouni
