Old Nikon Lenses - F2 era!

The manual lenses I have are all AI lenses. You can identify this
from the metal rabbit ears WITH HOLES on the aperture ring.

The rabbit ears on my 50mm f1.4 is triangular shaped, rather than rounded. Slot in the middle of course, but no holes. Is this a pre AI?

The D2H should have a feature where you can dial in the max aperture of your manual lenses, and that's appearantly what the camera needs to be able to meter with it. Read more on that in Bjørn Rørslett's D2H review at http://www.naturfotograf.com

I'd also like to add that 'guesstimating' exposure with manual lenses is much easier on a dSLR than a film SLR, as you can see the results immideatly (by checking the histogram and/or blown highlights on the LCD). So getting a good exposure set before you start shooting should be pretty easy. Far from the perfect solution, but I think it'll work for me.

I was about ready to get on a waiting list for a D70 but was
counting heavily on my Nikon ED 80-200mm 1:2.8D lens that I paid as
much for as this camera body costs. Will the meter on any of the
digital SLR's work with this lens?

You can use almost every Ai, Ai-s and Ai-P (ai-s with Cpu) with great results on a D70! No focus or metering but with the help of the histogram and highlights feature in the LCD, you can achieve good exposure in just 3 or 4 shots. The focus light on the viewfinder will work and help you determine right focus (althoug this is much easier to do visually with the D70 than with the D100 or S2).

Please note, however that most lens made till 1977 (called pre-Ai) will mount but are likely to damage your camera! This is a warning I have read on the instruction manuals from most modern Nikon film cameras and also on the D100. Unless these lens were updated to Ai status, you better not try to mount them as you may damage your camera.

To avoid any doubts, please refer to the following link that provides immense information on nikon bodies and lens (you'll have to reseach a bit:

I read in another thread on this forum that old manual lenses from
an F2 could be used on the D70. Sure there would be no auto focus
etc.

But is that so? Would they work?

lens for f2 call non-AI, can not be used!!!!

it can be modified call AI-D, it just like AI, you can use it on you f2, f3, f5, d1, d2 and d70.

also it can be modifed to cpu lens. then you can have meter.

Apply the Sunny 16 rule with manual bracketing up and down 1-2 stops and u will be ok
