I have been reading a number of posts re transfer of pics using card readers and formatting of cards of late and wonder if I am missing something. I have transferred all of mine using the USB cable, direct to the computer from the camera, without any problem. I then just delete all the pics in the camera, using the menu item to do so. In this way, I do not have to take my card out of the camera, or worry about whether or not the reader will corrupt it.

However, to repeat, am I missing something????

I have my card reader plugged into my computer all the time, so it's easier for me to pop the card out of the camera and transfer pics rather than hook the camera up each time. Also saves on battery power on the camera. Plus if I have several cards to transfer, easier to pop them in the card reader than the camera.

However, transferring from camera works just fine (it's the only way I can transfer from my SanDisk Ultra II card), and it doesn't cost any extra, so nothing wrong with that method either. :-)

I don't have a card reader either Giles.

I have transferred all pictures via the USB port, for me it is very easy.

My keyboard (Microsoft) has 2 USB ports built in, I leave the USB cable plugged in the keyboard all the time.

I have Windows XP Pro, and "move" the pictures from the camera to the computer. Thus, I never delete them, just move them.

I have debated getting a card reader, but I don't like handling the SD card and like you risk corrupting the card.

I have also thought what was worse as far as wear and tear are concerned. Plugging the USB cable in the camera all the time or removing the SD card all the time. Who knows.

Don't think you are missing a thing Giles. Except maybe springtime in North Carolina......

I just like having the convenience of sticking the card in the reader without having to hook anything up. I feel more comfortable not hooking my camera up to the computer like that, too..although many do it w/o problems. :)

Multi card readers just multiplied like rabbits the past two months or so. Could be had around $7 (after rebate). With this price range and much availability, compatibility issues are sure to follow. I used to do camera to PC transfer only until due to carelessness, I kept on hitting the USB cable when moving out of the PC area and there goes the digicam. Got 2 readers now and will buy one more for my office PC (laziness is the key word here).

I prefer the use of a card reader as well because I use several cards but also because the FZ10 plugged through the USB port transfers at USB 1.1 speed whereas the card reader transfers at USB 2.0. I think so anyway because the card reader is blinding fast compared to the USB cable connected to the FZ10.

I'm ready for wireless transfer. For the truly lazy.

I'm with you, by why stop there. How about voice-activated shutter release, everytime it hears the word "CHEESE" it takes a picture!

Seriously though, I use the card reader more than straight from the camera to download, its just faster for me.

• I confirm, i recently upgrade my Mac, the new model have USB2 unlike my old one USB1.1. Just in case because i use standard SD card, i try a “no name” USB2 reader with my SD SanDisk 64, 128 and 256Mo. In every case the transfert is at less twice speedy than with the FZ10 or with my old Sandisk Cruzer (1.1). It convince me to buy a USB2 reader (Sandisk ImageMate 8 in 1, $39.99CAN at Club Price)

• I leave the USB2 reader plug permanently in my Mac and travel with my old 1.1 Cruzer

Another advantage of the card reader is that you can transfer your images to another computer easily- Internet café or a friend's computer for example. I took about 200 photos on vacation. I transferred the photos without having to hook up the camera(s) and install drivers. I then was able to burn a CD and leave the photos for my mom who would like some for watercolor studies. Anyway.... very convenient.

I only do a one-way transfer. I don't write to the cards from my own or any other computer. You could probably do this but I have not tried it.

My thanks to all who have responded. I guess I will just have to take the Sandisk multi-format reader my brother gave me for Christmas out of it's package! Given that I have two trips to Europe coming up this summer/fall, Heather's suggestion in the last post is very worthwhile. Thanks again for taking the time to give me your thoughts

Here's another idea.

It's a 20GB Digital Photo Library at Radio Shack. Reads all kinds of memory and transfers to a computer only at USB 1.1. Would save buying extra SD cards.

wow tks -- that's exactly what i was looking for!! -- was thinking of buying another 256MB card but i guess this photo library is a much better option

i wonder though if there is a similar SD card reader wherein you can actually view the files/images you've transferred (like the digital wallets) - guess that wud cost a bit more :-)

My printer, a HP psc 2210 has a 6-in-1 (4 slots) reader built in. This is one of the reasons that I bought the printer. However, unlinke some card readers, it only allows me to insert one card at a time. It locks out the other slots. I have a card reader at work that sets up 4 removeable drives so I can copy directly from CF to SD and vice versa if I wanted to. Also, the printer's card reader is USB 1 eventhough the printer/scanner/copier/fax is USB 2.0. :(

I may get an USB 2.0 reader since I now have the Panasonic SD cards so I can ge the 10mb/s transfer speeds.

Later,

But, it is USB 1.1. I wold prefer not to transfer gigs of pictures at USB 1.1 speeds. But, for the price, it looks nice.

Archos makes a pretty nifty unit (I haven't tried it) that does it all. Transfer and then view on the same device. Gonna cost ya though :)
