I have noticed that my 10D indicates different settings depending on which display I look at. For example - In AV mode, after locking focus and exposure (and aperture) then looking through the viewfinder there will be a fixed aperture setting and a shutter speed hopefully the camera picked. The LCD display on top of the camera will have a different shutter speed setting. Which one did the camera pick? Playing back the images it seems the settings in the viewfinder are the correct ones but why didn't Canon have the LCD readout match - or maybe my camera is broke. I can't believe I've shot 12,000 + pictures and just noticed this. Perhaps I have a misunderstanding of the function of this LCD.

if you are really locking the exposure. Are you sure the settings are locked?? Are you using the exposure lock button * or the shutter release?

Rich,

Yesterday I had the camera mounted on a tripod, holding the shutter button halfway down and looking back and forth at the two and saw them with different readings. When I get home I guess I'll try the "lock" button, I've never used it before. (I thought it was odd)

It's been to Canon once for a shutter replacement - I wore out the first one until I got Error 99 all to frequently - maybe Canon goofed it up somehow.

The reading in the camera is what the metering is picking up and will blink if the settings are off..if I'm right when the settings are right nothing will be blinking.

when you hold the shutter down halfway like you were doing. Otherwise the metering will change as lighting conditions change. I don't think it is possible to have different readings on the two displays at the same time. Both meters are getting their information from the same place.

they match. by the time i got home from work and got WINGnut fed and down to bed it was dark outside but testing it by pointing at the television and stuff now they seem to match. (i know it was not doing this over the weekend)
  • when i get a chance to take it back outside in the daylight i'll report back.

The difference could be caused if you are in a brightly lit area and light can enter the view finder when your eye/face is not there. To test this place camera on tripod. Take a shot with eye to viewfinder. Then step away from rear of camera and take another shot. Take a thrid shot with your thumb on the view finder. Compare the exposure readings in the EXIF. Is there a difference?

You lifting your head to look at the reading in the top LCD may be allowing just enough light in through the view finder to cause it to adjust. Perhaps the reflection from your face or clothing.
