2) How much photographic experience do you have?
My father showed me how to handle a camera (Nikon F, Rollei SL 66, ...) and to work in an own Dark Room. With 14 I got my first own SLR (The mentioned Minolta). Shot with this quite a while. Later on the hobby got to expensive for me and I lost sight of the photogrophy. With 20 years I bought the Fuji just for plain cheap point & shoot. After the first camping vacation with this thing in Souther France I was really mad at me loosing money to Fuji... should have invested more in Minolta or should have changed to Nikon to get a nice lens collection.

Now with 23 I am playing with the idea to get the D70 or a film scanner. But this depends on getting a new job (the following months will show)

Hi Everyone,

I've been reading these forums a lot lately and have found a lot of
useful information and insights into DSLR ownership.

I thought it would be interesting if we could have a mini survey of
current D70 owners or people who are considering the D70 as their
next camera. By having this survey, I hope we can have a bit of a
community review by the end of it...

Now the questions:

1) Which other cameras + equipment do you currently own, have
owned, or used?
Canon 35mm and D10 (for a month).
2) How much photographic experience do you have?
30+years pro and amateur.
3) What is your favourite style of photography (what do you plan to
use the D70 for most)?
Family gatherings, nature/outdoors.
4) What made you choose the D70?
Feature set, value, instrument feel, reputation.
5) Do you hope to earn money with the D70?
No.
6) How much experience do you have with computers and photo editing?
Lots.....
7) Are you planning on printing a lot of your photos? If so, at
what size? At home or professionally?
Yes, mostly up to 5x7, occassional 8x10.
8) If you own it, briefly describe the best features of the D70?
Versaility & feature set, feel and build quality, really is always ready to shoot, Nikon glass, it knows how to focus (had 2 10D's,, that's why I'm here).
9) Again for owners, briefly describe any things that bother you
about the D70:
I'm a Canon convert so everything works backward, starting with the lens mount. D70 does most things extremely well except for artificial light white balance, especially internal flash - results are very blue/cyan. Yes, I can adjust and/or preset but I expected better from Nikon. Frankly I'm on the fence on this one, tweaking and trimming is expected with dslr's, major reblancing is not. I think Nikon goofed in a major area here. Too bad, everything else works so well.
10) Any general advice/tips for new DSLR owners? Would you have
done anything differently if you were buying your first DSLR again?
Do your homework. Pick a dealer with a generous return policy. These things are incredibly complicated inside and it's easy to get one (any mfr) that's not 100%. If you think I'm being picky, offer them $10 less than the asking price and see how far out the door you get!
Finally, if you've got any shots taken with the D70 that you'd like
to share, please include a link here.

I look forward to hearing everyone's answers...

Thanks for your time,

Stephen

use the D70 for most)?

the devil :) and the features. doesn't hurt that I already own Nikon lenses but I almost went for the 10D. $$ decided it
5) Do you hope to earn money with the D70?

6) How much experience do you have with computers and photo editing?

10) Any general advice/tips for new DSLR owners? Would you have
done anything differently if you were buying your first DSLR again?
do business with a shop that will support and help you, try to buy all equipment from the same place -- if they're good, they always help in ways the mass market/mail order will not

no
Finally, if you've got any shots taken with the D70 that you'd like
to share, please include a link here.
sorry not right now, images are owned by customers.

Now the questions:

1) Which other cameras + equipment do you currently own, have
owned, or used?
Pentax manual SLR -> Nikon FE manual SLR -> Nikon F80 SLR

Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 D
Nikon 35mm f/2.8 (manual)
Sigma 20mm f/1.8
Tamron 28-200mm XR

A wiggly tripod and a cable release is lying around somewhere...

Casio Exilim EX-Z3 digital p&s (great little toy!)
2) How much photographic experience do you have?
About 5 years, not including p&s experimenting :-)
3) What is your favourite style of photography (what do you plan to
use the D70 for most)?
Tough one. 'General photography'? Candids, available light shots, handheld. I like PJ a lot, but can't say it's my style.

I care more about mood and composition than absolute sharpness and 'truth' - but am still working on getting all that into my pics :-)
4) What made you choose the D70?
The Nikon feel. And it feels and responds like a film SLR. I also love the film like high ISO grain.
5) Do you hope to earn money with the D70?
Not really. But I'm a whore: anyone paying, I'll sell :-)
6) How much experience do you have with computers and photo editing?
Moderate (but intense, lol)! About a year. After getting the Casio p&s and PS Elements, I discovered a whole new world with the digital darkroom! It wasn't dark, and it had an undo button! Upgraded to PS7 and loving it! I've read some books on the subject, very helpful.
7) Are you planning on printing a lot of your photos? If so, at
what size? At home or professionally?
'Normal sized' prints + some enlargements, but only for the good ones I'd like to share. Prints will probably be both pro and home. Pro for anything that's going on a wall.
8) If you own it, briefly describe the best features of the D70?
I've fondled one, does that count? The handeling of the camera! It feels very 'right' in my hands, as opposed to other dSLRs I've tried.
9) Again for owners, briefly describe any things that bother you
about the D70:
Don't own one yet, but the measurebator inside worries that moiré might show up, and that Canon releases an 8mp 10D soon. But I'm just gonna jump the train and never look back :-)
10) Any general advice/tips for new DSLR owners? Would you have
done anything differently if you were buying your first DSLR again?
Learn basic photography, get a book, learn about composition, exposure and 'seeing' light. All this is so much more important than any in camera settings or post tweaking.
Finally, if you've got any shots taken with the D70 that you'd like
to share, please include a link here.

I look forward to hearing everyone's answers...

Thanks for your time,

Stephen
I like this thread! Thanks. Hoping you're still up for doing that 'community review' at the end of this, Stephen. :-)

Thomas.

1) Which other cameras + equipment do you currently own, have
owned, or used?
I currently own a Nikon F-100, Nikon N8008, Nikon F Photomic, Nikon EM, and a Linhof 4x5 View Camera.
2) How much photographic experience do you have?
This year makes it my 20 year anniversary of my first Photography class in college!
3) What is your favourite style of photography (what do you plan to
use the D70 for most)?
Landscape, followed by abstract and portrait work.
4) What made you choose the D70?
Well, I don't own one yet! But this is as close as I have come to making the leap to Digital.

I am considering the D70 because of its price, positive reviews, and the fact that I can use most of the Nikon F mount lenses that I have. And, of course, all the advantages that come with digital photography, such as instant feedback.
5) Do you hope to earn money with the D70?
nope. Just a hobby (for 20 years).
6) How much experience do you have with computers and photo editing?
I went to a digital darkroom less than 6 months ago. I am using PS CS, and I am very impressed with the quality that can be had with todays inkjet printers (I do 80% B&W on an Epson 1280 with MIS CFS and the UT2 inks).
7) Are you planning on printing a lot of your photos? If so, at
what size? At home or professionally?
Yes, see above. Wont go bigger than 11x14, and mostly 8x10.
8) If you own it, briefly describe the best features of the D70?
Don't own it yet!
9) Again for owners, briefly describe any things that bother you
about the D70:
N/A
10) Any general advice/tips for new DSLR owners? Would you have
done anything differently if you were buying your first DSLR again?
N/A

1) Which other cameras + equipment do you currently own, have
owned, or used?
Nikon F80s, Olympus Mju II, Pentax Optio S, Hasselblad 501C/M + lot of stuff...
2) How much photographic experience do you have?
Not enough ;-)
3) What is your favourite style of photography (what do you plan to
use the D70 for most)?
Mostly landscape. Little portrait.
4) What made you choose the D70?
The first affordable Nikon dslr.
5) Do you hope to earn money with the D70?
No ;-)
6) How much experience do you have with computers and photo editing?
5+ years
7) Are you planning on printing a lot of your photos? If so, at
what size? At home or professionally?
Not so much. Professionally.
8) If you own it, briefly describe the best features of the D70?
Lot of features. Excellent metering. Good AF. Excellent raw. Good speed.
9) Again for owners, briefly describe any things that bother you
about the D70:
Nothing yet.
10) Any general advice/tips for new DSLR owners? Would you have
done anything differently if you were buying your first DSLR again?
Learn to use RAW. DSLR is not a point and shoot. You can get much more with post processing.
Finally, if you've got any shots taken with the D70 that you'd like
to share, please include a link here.
Not yet. I'll find some hosting soon.
