Goose Extreme Close-up

Fuji S602 + B-300 @357mm, ISO 160, 1/320, f 4.0, 2x crop, fill flash

After being at Yankee Stadium and watching the Yankees louse, I decided to enjoy the lovely spring weather in the marsh at Ally Pond Creak. I found this goose sitting on her nest in the reeds and got as close as possible which meant that she hissed at me one time. The sun is about 30 minutes from setting and she is looking at it. I spent nearly an hour toning down the reeds which were picked up by the sun and my flash. There was one blade of grass that was bright orange across her neck which I removed. Seeing the image now, it might have been better with the aperture wide open.

I quite like this one Morris, in particular the way the shadows show up across the head and neck. I'm not sure how you managed that, along with the evident late afternoon tones, using fill flash: very adept I'd say.

Also I must complement you on your fine darkroom technique in knocking down the background a stop or two; also very adept, and very effective.

You just can not beet the beauty of late day or early morning sun to enhance nature photos. You get the nice shadows and beautiful read shift. As for fill flash, that’s just part of my tool kit. So are my darkroom skills.

Hi Morris,

I like the image as it is, but indeed a softer background might have been better. But the subject was interesting enough to look past the background.

I like the moss in the beak, nice balance.

The only time I like to be that close to a goose is when it is being serverd with a nice Orange sauce. (Pear sauce is good too.)

morris - love the sunset colours - my favorite time of day - we have not had many of those for over two months here in london ;-)

i also enjoyed the 'goose down' this guy/gal has freed up... i've a great affinity for this stuff, as it's stopped me freezing at over 17,ooo feet. look forward to seeing more of your sunset captures.

I tried the B&W idea and adding contrast to the red chanel did make a nice B&W, but you louse the nice colors.
