Photoshop has made me neurotic

Do you have this experience? You're looking at the photos taken by
family and friends and you just can't stop your mind from thinking
of all the things you would like to do to make that photo better,
not to mention the bad photography. I'm getting the impression
that my brother may be getting uncomfortable showing photos to the
family (on laptop) in my presence. 'Mark, could you leave the room.
I'm going to show some of the photos from our recent trip'. ahh...
I just can't help it....'if only you used a touch of
levels'...'maybe a bit of hue/saturation adjustment'. Hopefully
I'll get over this phase and appreciate images for what they are.
But maybe not. :-)
Mark,

When I first started getting involved with making pictures, too many years ago to mention, I looked at EVERYTHING as a photograph! My interest waned over the years and I lost that "lust."

About 2 years ago I bought my first digital camera and was "re"-hooked. After suffering a miocardial (sp?) infarction about a year and a half ago I had a lot of down time, had PS 5.5 AND a digital camera! I'm so hooked on this stuff that there are times that I can't even stand myself! I'll look at a foggy morning (in real life) and try to visualize what filters I might use to remove the haze.
I use (in my mind) the Healing Brush on most of the people I know

I'll do a Channel Mixer B&W Conversion to the most mundane subjects (in my mind.)

We need to mirror Uncle Frank's FCAS (FoamCore Addicts Society) and create our PSAA (PhotoShop Addicts Anonymous). I believe that many of us, here, are already charter members. As for me, I'm about to edit my profile to include PSAA.

If you are, I thank you...I'm going to Nicaragua in 2 weeks for a month, and your information was a HUGE help!
Thanks again!!

This is all very funny -- who in their right mind would spend untold hours in a photolab DARKROOM learning the process for nearly three years in HONOLULU??? And you think YOU'RE addicted! Digital allowed the light of day into my processes so things are slightly more normal. But you are correct in that everything you look at is scrutinized with that imaginary viewfinder and now PS filters, actions etc. LOL! Great thread. :-)

That's so funny! I'm now in my final year, reading for my final exam. I worry I have every disease I read about, and I see people around me with symptoms I recognize from my studying. Did you know almost everybody suffers from a serious and/or deadly disease!?!

Emmersing myself in Photoshop almost makes me unable to look at a picture and appreciate it for what it is. And now deciding on getting a dSLR or not (OK, I've decided I will), I mostly look at a picture to see if it's digital or film - and if digital, if it looks very 'digital' or more filmlike.

But the insight into your mind during med school makes me feel all normal again, lol!

I guess the way to normalize is to diversify. I find the more fields of interest I dive in to, the more perspective I get on my other obsessions. And of course, a nice girlfriend and good friends are the only things keeping us all sane!

Thomas.

Not just specific to western medicine. I studied Oriental Medicine / Acupuncture and most of us obsessesed over the symptoms of the patterns we studied. It was ridiculous. We were just becoming a bunch of hypochondriacs. It actually didn't help to know that this is common to most medical schoool students. My problems were real!

It bothers me a little bit when i'm in nature, or any experience for that matter, and instead of letting in the beauty I'm looking for an opportunity to take a photo. I'm getting better at giving time to both, finding a good balance. Met this guy when I was travelling in France who was anti camera. A bit of an extremist. He complained that he went a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon and all this woman on his raft would do is take photos. I told him, you were there for the rafting experience. She was there for the photography experience. I hope it made sense to him. As photography was not a passion, or even interest of his, he found her behavior strange. Don't imagine anyone here would think so. In fact...maybe one of you was that gal!

Mark,

What surprises me is how often I notice flaws or think of improvements in published or otherwise "professional" pictures. When my friends show me photos I can turn it off, I just figure they don't know any better. But pros ought to...

I'm the same way too. It's not unusual for me to dream I'm taking pictures or Photoshopping.

I've actually made a deliberate decision on a couple of occasions recently not to bring the camera, and actually watch what the kids are doing instead of photographing. I did enjoy the experience more in some ways, as I wasn't having to worry about the lighting or the flash or knocking everyone else out of the way to get a seat in the front row so I could take pictures! But I was still thinking about some misssed photo opportunities! It's funny but video has never grabbed me in the same way as still photography as a medium for recording life's experience. I do posess a video camera but I haven't used it in over a year. I have some quite funny shots taken at a concert at the kindegarten last year of a row of about fifteen parents all concentrating fiercely on videoing their kids. I don't know who is sadder, me or them!
