Too low! www.amphotoworld.com any good?

Chris--I've never heard of them, but that means little. They could be absolutely straight-arrow and just 'buying' some business to get started.

If you deal with them, be sure to use a creditcard so you have some defense against them.

Not familiar with them. Couldn't find any reference to them at http://www.photo.net , which is strange since they say they have been in business for "21 years."

There return policy makes me nervous...especially the last line where it looks like they say you must return defective equipment to the manufacturer...not them. A restocking fee is also a warning sign.

Another warning sign....I just checked their UPS ground shipping and handling charge to Michigan for the 100-400 IS lens. It was $66.50 which brings the lens up to $1396.49. Thats only $100 less than B&H.

They have the D30 for $2420 and the 100-400L IS for $1330. Anybody
ever do business with them before. No physical contact info and the
fax is 718 area code. I'm leary.

I suspect that they are "gray/international" market products. They don't say, which combined with the price, makes me suspect that they are gray market.

I would certainly like to know the experiences of others. Some of their prices are very low. Like the 70-200 F2.8 for $1009.99 and the 28-70 F2.8 for for $909.99. These seem to be about 10% to 20% below other sites price for gray market lenses.

It doesn't look so good when you see their shipping and handling charges...$70 bucks for a lens shipped UPS ground!!!!

I just called them. I asked them about the 28-70 lens and they said they have it in stock. I asked if i can pick it up and they said yes. The only thing is, if you pick it up, the deal is cash only. They "don't have a credit card terminal". If anyone is intersted they are located on Ave. L between East 29th street and Norstrand ave. I'm going to check them out later today or tommorow.

Chris:

Sounds fishy to me.

I'm in Brooklyn, so I decided to do some checking. No listing in either the white pages or Yellow pages for them. As you said the web site didn't give a street address. If they've been around for 21 years, what did they do before the web, if they do't have a street address? And if they do have a retail store, why not give the address?

I tried calling their voice number, the only one they listed was the 1-800 number, which I can't reach from my calling area since I'm local to them. Of course the web site didn't list their local number.

If they are legit, why would they hide?

The closest Camera store name to them, seems to be Abe's of Maine, hence the AM? Well if it's Abe's of Maine I'd stay away from them. I've heard bad things about them, most that they do bait and switch. Also Don Wiss does an excellent posting every month in rec.photo.digital listing suspicious dealers and Abe's seems to always make the list. I don't know
if they are Abe's or not, but it seems like a possibilty.

Daniel spoils all the fun, he is just too level headed :-).

I decided to compare on Cameraworld that only deal in US warranty and has a good reputation. They have a Valentine Special of $100 on orders over $750 and $50 on orders over $499 and UPS Blue shipping of only $14.95. That makes a US warranty Canon 28-70 F2.8 about $1020 and a Canon f2.8 70-200 about $1150 (plus shipping) if you by only one of the two.

Since the D30 came on my wife's birthday, maybe a F2.8 lens makes sense for valentine's day :-).

That's $1400 for most likely the 100-400l IS import. $115 more for the USA
lens at Camerworld or the import at B&H. Is $115 worth the piece of mind?
This is tough!

Hello,

The phone numbers are different. In general, I would never buy a camera from a place that does not have a store front. Another rule of thumb," never trust anyone from Brooklyn who says they are from Orchard Beech."

Spend the extra few hundred bucks - buy from a good dealer. B&H are spectacular. I am working with Norman Camera, currently, in Michigan. They are wonderful. Absolutely wonderful (www.normancamera.com). I cannot reccomend them enough - they cost a few bucks more, but they will make sure you are happy. And by a few bucks more - it is still less then list.

I had no end of trouble with my E-10 (pity, too...great body). They took them (count -3) back with a smile...I think. I never DID see their faces....:) The first two had faulty AF, the third had a dead pixel on the LCD at all shutter speeds. Add in the E-10's parallax AF issues to boot and it was just not for me. The point is, they could have been difficult and they have been nothing but supportive.

Everyone knows that Orchard Beech is in Da Bronx ;)

And Alex's post about not taking credit cards in person makes me even more suspicious of these guys. Let me get this straight, they can take a credit card over the web but not in person? Makes no sense, unless they are shady.

They probably don't want to take the credit card % hit which can be 4%. For online sales they can recoupe that with their 6% shipping and handling charge. Picking it up in person would be the best way to go about it. That way you can see what you are dealing with. But, of course, you will get hit with the sales tax which is what....6 or 7% in New York.

Let us know how it works out.

In that case, does anyone know of the best price for the D30 from any "credible" retailer? Seems like NormanCamera's $2895 seems the best I can find...
thanks.
