I think you need to get closer, mostly I see background, I want to see more of your lovely daughter. (not in any purient way) but, IMHO portraits are all about the person.

Well I have been drinking for the last few hours, (SNPA!) but I'll try and not be too crude anyway....

(and let me just start but saying... actually, no I won't say that. let's just say she looks great, and you've done a more than adequate job of making her look good)

1. I think this would look even better if you dropped her right hand a little. Right now, it runs very parallel to the top of the dress. Drop the wrist a little, make it look a little more casual, and show off more of the dress.

2. I think I had a two, but now I can't see the picture anymore. :(

Cheers,
Karl P

A nice pose, but the lighting is a bit harsh. The shadow of her
hair on her left side is distracting.

Her skin tone is a bit light, perhaps a slightly different color
temperature setting (if you're processing RAW) or play with white
balance.

What light sources are you using?

Julian:

Hope you don't mind. I did a pass at what I think might be a nice target. Everyone has different taste, but here is the result of some editing in PS7, incorporating some comments from others:

Hi Julian,

Keep up the good work.

There are many ways to take good portraits and everyone has a different technique. However, I would make the following suggestions as a starting point.

Turn camera through 90 deg & shoot in portrait, not landscape.

Move model further away from the background to throw it out of focus and make it less fussy and distracting.

Model body is too square on to the camera. Try turning the body/shoulders about 30 to 45 deg to the camera, with just the head turned to face camera.

Move in closer to fill the frame. For head & shoulders use something like 80 to 100mm lens, and keep aperture fairly wide to minimise depth of field.

Your lighting was reasonable, possibly a little more frontal light to cut shadow areas a little bit. Normal starting point would be main frontal light just to one side of camera position and fill in at about 45 deg and around ¼ to 1/6 of light output of main light.

I only have a couple of mono portraits on my gallery at the moment, but look at http://www.pbase.com/image/27309919

Long live monochrome. What would Ansel Adams have produced with the 300D (or Rebel if you like).

Thanks for posting Jules, I've learned a lot from these subsequent suggestions. You have a beautiful model to test out your new studio with.

I have started to look for little a highlight in eyes in the photos (can't remember the term). I don't know how you might get that with her left eye with your equipment though. Blind her with fill flash from onboard flash? :-O

Nice portrait.

Using a main frontal light should automatically give a highlight in both eyes. When using multiple lights you usually get multiple highlights. The extra ones need to be removed using your image editor. Is is normal just to leave the one from the main light.

Julian, you might consider a key light to bring the subject out from the background a bit and add some life to her hair. Maybe mount one of the 'brollies up high if you don't want to buy another unit.

Julian, I see you are really into this DSLR stuff now. Well good for you. Glad to see you are going at it.

My own personal take on your pics is: WAY too much background and not enough girl...lose the chair, stick her on a stool, and the hands auto go into her lap. Turn her body 30 degrees and turn the head in.

As I said, my OWN taste, but ya know I am weird anyway.

BTW, me and a buddy hiked 2 hours to a waterall near Mt Rainier yesterday, scrambled 500 foot up a cliffside to get a good view but the lighting was poor and everything was a dull UK-Day gray. Total waste of time, but got a good work out all the same.

Oh God! A 1D. You will be uncontrollable then.

I have just got myself a fabulous deal with Dell (US) and have ordered a 10D, a 28-135 IS USM, Canon EX555 Speedlight, and a couple of Sandisk Ultras to get me going. They will take a week or so to get here, but good time they are a comin!

Going to Hawaii in a couple of weeks for a quick vaca as well, so they may be here in time, hopefully.

Did you go over to Florida again this year?

I guess I'll have to try and keep up with you now. Can you send your daughter over for a couple of weeks? Nah, didn't think so.

Move model further away from the background to throw it out of
focus and make it less fussy and distracting.
To get the background more out if focus you can also use a wider aperture.
