Hey Guys,

I've been playing around with my FZ10 for a little while now and wanted to know what techniques others are using. I usually use Spot Mode with auto. I guess the reason that I use this setting is because I really don't know what aperature/shutter speed combo to use for certain situations. I know the basics ... like the F8 is a smaller opening that F2.8 and also provides less depth of field. I also know that you would want to use a faster shutter speed to stop action and vice versa. When it comes to exposure compensation... I have no clue!!!! Is there a tutorial somewhere or charts that show these relationships? I mainly shoot landscapes and portraits.

Actually, f/8 provides MORE depth of field than f/2.8. The smaller the lens opening, the more depth of field.

I prefer a middle ground like f/5.6 for more shots.

Here are a couple of web sites which should help:

Second one is the best. Use the menu on the left side to navigate thru the site,

I'm a pretty new photographer too, but have found these to be helpful:
  • Post your pics and ask for real appraisals. I use ephotozine.com.
  • Experiment!! Just take loads and see what works and what doesn't.
  • Read a few books - doesn't need to be about digital photography - any good photo book will do.
  • Read some mags.
  • Look at other people's pics and see what you like and don't. Then note how to avoid the problems, but keep the best bits.

A unique and simple way of illustrating the aperture/shutter speed relationship. Nice find, Ramblin.

I have a question about spot metering.... If I am taking a landscape on a sunny day day(sun in front of me). In order to get get the sky exposed correctly, do I spot meter the sky? Am I on the right track when I say that you meter the part of the composition that you want the exposure exposed for?

Thanks again
