I've finally decided to get a 12-24 zoom, but I may not be able to afford it until after I take a trip to Greece in a few weeks. If I have to go without the zoom, I am considering an inexpensive low-light prime that I would still want to use after I get the zoom.

The Sigma primes I've looked at (20, 24, and 28 1.8's) seem appealing compared to their Nikkor counterparts (2.8's). Here is my question: While I know that the Sigmas will not be that sharp wide open, are they as sharp or sharper than the Nikkor lenses at 2.8 (i.e. Nikkor wide open vs Sigma stopped down)?

Most information I've found on this forum has favored the 24mm for Nikon, while there isn't too much info on the Sigmas. Any recommendations are appreciated!

Thanks

I googled "Sigma 20mm" and got some listings

A better gallery - lens looks like a winner to me [and it would bit a tad wider on a Nikon - 1.5x vs 1.6]

Don't forget the little Nikkor 10.5mm and also the 16mm (full-frame) fisheyes. In many cases these may be preferrable where the barrel distortion is not a factor, and the angle they provide is 180 degrees, nearly double that of the 12-24 at its widest setting (99 degrees for APS-sized images). Neither is inexpensive, however.
