I visited this forum before I bought my 300D. I learned a lot and saw a lot of photographs taken with this camera. It helped me with my decision to spend that much money on a camera and lenses. I am just an amateur and a novice one at that. I bought the 300D and continued to visit the forum to learn more and ask questions. I have bought several lenses to go with the camera and am very happy with my purchases.

Now, I find myself not wanting to visit this forum anymore. There are so many posts about the problems with the 300D, how it compares to the Nikon 70, and now that a black 300D is coming out, that is so much better than the silver/black one (even though it is the same camera).

I almost find myself wondering if something is wrong with me because I still am very happy with my silver/black 300D.

If people are not happy with their camera, get another one. Don't keep complaining here. I don't want to hear it. I want to see other people's photographs and learn what techniques they used to get a particular shot. That is what I visit this forum for. Not to wonder if something is wrong with me because I am happy with my 300D or if my photographs are not good enough or I am not experienced enough to find all these faults with the 300D.

Everyday it seems there is something new to complain about. There are more threads complaining then there are showing actual photographs and techniques. And, I guess you could add this one to the list.
I just had to put my 2 cents in and say I like my silver/black 300D.

Just ignore the threads.

Even Phil recently indicated that he was getting sick of those types of posts in his forums.

So, just enjoy your great pics, contribute to the other threads,
and boycot the stupid ones. Remember the old saying,
"What if they gave a war and no one came?" Do it.

So, here are some pics to share. Comments welcome, not
required.

BTW I used the kit lens and a Sigma 70-300 MS II APO.
The sigma is decent but I do use a lot of sharpening for the pics,
especially for the macros. My results so far trying to get an image of
the moon have been poor - not sharp, hmmmmm. Tripod? Lens?
Dont know yet.

Also, while most people seem to like using
photoshop for sharpening I like doing it in C1 Rebel. I havent really explored
the more controlled but more complicated masking / high pass
sharpening methods like on Jay Arraich's site.

Just wanted to drop a note and let you know how much I enjoyed your pictures, they were AWESOME!! I really liked the waterfall the best, if I may ask was this then with the kit lens and if so what settings did you use?? I'm still an amateur at this, so need all the help I can get.

It's what it is...a fine entry level DSLR, which is more camera than I know how to handle. I love the pics I get from it.

.........when you feel the need to tell all these strangers how satisfied you are with your choice of camera.

The new stuff is out and it's better than what you have and you feel you wished you had money to get the latest and greatest but you don't , so you have to qualify your original choice by trying to convince yourself that your camera is exactly what you want at the moment.

My 10D is already a year old technology and I can admit and accept that the D70 is probably as good (maybe better)? and even faster for lots less money. No question that it's a better value too.

regardless, I'll keep the 10D as long as the differences stay reasonably minor but when the 10D starts noticeably lagging the competition I'll update .
Personally, I happen to like the latest and greatest.
My advice is to ignore whats new till you can afford to update.

maybe sometimes people are just happy with their camera.

you can poke around and find exif for most of my pics.

The red window display was shot in jpeg and tweaked - it was taken on my very first outting with the camera. The others that I posted here were all taken in RAW and converted in C1 Rebel (very easy to use and I really like the capability and the tonality that I get, plus it leaves a full 12 bit depth file to start PSE with).

I use different modes depending on how lazy I am, what I am trying to do, and what the histogram looks like (I retake a lot of shots trying to get them better). I usually use "P" mode and shift the program with the wheel and add exposure comp to that. Sometimes Aperture priority.

The waterfall was shot at f20 (I went for very small aperture to get the full depth of field and the long 1/2 sec shutter time, but not start losing sharpness to diffraction effects - lenses tend to get softer again after f16 or f20 or so due to this). I had -.6 compensation, I think to prevent blowing out the highlights up in the area with the sky (although there is a little secret there which I wont go into but it involves PSE2), but I cant remember now for sure. It was on a tripod of course. Flowing water tends to soften/blur at around 1/4 sec but 1/2 sec and up is best. I think I had a polarizer on the lens as well which helped allow a long shutter opening time just because it cuts down on the amount of light (it wasnt used in the true sense of a polarizing filter for this pic). I cant remember for the life of me why I used asa 200, 100 would have made a lot more sense and would have allowed an even slower 1 sec exposure (I must have had it set from earlier shots where I needed shorter exposures in order to hand-hold the camera). I am pretty sure I used the self timer so that I didnt shake the camera during the release.

Yes, it was with the kit lens all the way at 18mm to get the full depth of field, cover the entire scene, and get the water flowing right up to the near foreground (wide angle is the way to go to get a forground subject in with an overall scene).

And thank you very much for the compliment!

take a look at Reichmann's latest article on Luminous Landscape. I think it is very true. The problem is how to take full advantage of any of these new advanced cameras, not worry what is coming next before the old one is even used. If I spend about $1000 or more on a picture taking tool, I want it to last 15 years and be satisfied with it. I want it to be reliable. I think one is very fortunate to be able to own either a 300d or D70.

johnd1, I think you're way off the mark here.

I for one, knew exactly what I was buying and exactly why I was buying it. I have no remorse as a result of buying the DRebel. In fact, I am currently thinking of buying a second one.

Don't try to psycho analyze every one or try to say that every one is suffering from remorse.

By the way, I love my Digital Rebel.

There are plenty of happy owners on here. Lately it seems as if there are more unhappy owners though. The happy ones are always quieter (smarter?).

Black, silver, hack, no hack, D70, DR, canon's stupid, canon's smart, phil is god, phil is goon, blah, blah, blah, blah.

I am reading fewer and fewer posts with each passing day.

Show me a great photo or photographer and I stay hooked on this forum.

There are so many more high quality photos on here than mine. I keep looking and admiring and wondering and learning. If I had more quality photos I would flood this place with them just to get past the drivel.

Now if my photos would just get better at the same rate I can skip past the worthless hoohah on here...

jus' my 8 cents worth...

Absolutely disagree. The more complaints the better, so long as they are not always the same complaint over and over. Just don't open them, move on. If you think you could learn something good or bad, then you will read.

I spent 1000 for a Sony 707 "only to find out about the problems". And good I did so. The camera had to be sent back twice for problems Sony, after being raked over the coals here, finally admitted to. They were in complete denial and many owners were left with inferior cameras that should have been recalled. It happens. What about the guy who asked me to be sure to let him know when the Fuji 700 was released as he wanted one. Had I not read the reviews and the forum, he'd have one today and be very sorry. They did lie, their dynamic range was not obviously any better than anyone else's, even though the sensors were working, their idiotic firmware didn't use them!!! Like the refrigerators where the temp adjustment knobs were not connected to anything (actually happened).

I almost bought a Canon S20, figuring the company would not lie, but they did. Their firmware was way way off and they never admitted to it, blaming the users, or saying it was only natural, etc.

You just got lucky, that's all. And you now can't imagine needing another digicam. Wait...trust me...wait, there will come a time when another camera will be in your thoughts. The Rebel will bag great shots, which will raise your perception and appreciation of the world around you...that's great. It starts the ball rolling, though.

Somehow, you now see more beauty around you. Then you find yourself looking at tiny little cameras to be in your pocket always for that magic shot you always seem to think is out there just waiting for you, and horrors, you didn't have your hulking SLR!!! But the tiny ones don't have the high resolution, only a few MP, and slow. Then the news breaks..

Minolta's about to release their native 6mp g600, and others similar ultra-lights with ultra-sharp lenses and shirt-pocket size, with huge prints possible from them...but are they really any good? run, don't walk back to the forum...there's a support group for it. WE meet here, welcome

Hey "Pint",

Enjoy your camera. This forum is great in some respects, but
often it's best just to turn off the comp and just go out shooting
with the cam and ignore the stuff thats posted here.

The silver colour is unique. It's based from the Canon film 'Rebel' series.

Embarque.

Totally agree with you mate, the 300D is a sensational camera and its well worth the price.
I actually like the silver and black and think it looks like a classy camera.

I guess the world is made up of complaints, but its how you sift the (cr@p) that counts.

Enjoy the camera, I am!

There are so many more high quality photos on here than mine. I
keep looking and admiring and wondering and learning. If I had
more quality photos I would flood this place with them just to get
past the drivel.

Now if my photos would just get better at the same rate I can skip
past the worthless hoohah on here...

jus' my 8 cents worth...
I visited this forum before I bought my 300D. I learned a lot and
saw a lot of photographs taken with this camera. It helped me
with my decision to spend that much money on a camera and lenses. I
am just an amateur and a novice one at that. I bought the 300D and
continued to visit the forum to learn more and ask questions. I
have bought several lenses to go with the camera and am very happy
with my purchases.
Now, I find myself not wanting to visit this forum anymore. There
are so many posts about the problems with the 300D, how it compares
to the Nikon 70, and now that a black 300D is coming out, that is
so much better than the silver/black one (even though it is the
same camera).
I almost find myself wondering if something is wrong with me
because I still am very happy with my silver/black 300D.
If people are not happy with their camera, get another one. Don't
keep complaining here. I don't want to hear it. I want to see
other people's photographs and learn what techniques they used to
get a particular shot. That is what I visit this forum for. Not
to wonder if something is wrong with me because I am happy with my
300D or if my photographs are not good enough or I am not
experienced enough to find all these faults with the 300D.
Everyday it seems there is something new to complain about. There
are more threads complaining then there are showing actual
photographs and techniques. And, I guess you could add this one to
the list.
I just had to put my 2 cents in and say I like my silver/black 300D.

Got my drebel (kit) on tuesday, and I've been exploring it a lot. (I wish there was more stuff worth taking pictures of around here.) I can only say WOW!.

I invested a lot of time in choosing, mainly between de rebel, the D70 and the Minolta A2. I was driving my wife crazy asking her to look at pictures, on screen and on paper, and deciding which were best. I asked other people too, and of course also counted my own opinion.
  • I didn't get the A2 because I hate noise. All the current 8MP cameras are too noisy for my taste.
  • I didn't get the D70 because of the moire problems (which I saw on several regular test pictures, like the standard set on http://www.steves-digicams.com . I also hate noise in a clear blue sky.
  • I got the rebel mostly for the "smooth" colors. Noise may be similar to the D70 in artificial tests, but not in the real-world pictures.
There were a few surprises though:
  • The camera is huge! I'm used to a Nikon 950 which is not the smallest, and gave our children a kodak 4530 which is awesome and small, and the rebel is just huge. I also have an old Olympus OM-G and the rebel does not even fit inside the protective cover I have for that.
  • Exposure is hard to get right. The feature of highlighting overexposed areas is great but it does remind me that getting the exposure right is hard. I already created a custom setting which is like parameter 1 but with normal contrast, and that should help a bit. Also still struggling with getting the AF assist to work without using the flash for photos. I'm slowly learning. But I'm enjoying every second of using the rebel.
I'm a happy camper and hope to learn a lot more here.

read the educational section on the canon site.. explains how to get better exposure..

remember too that manual setting allows you to use center weighted average .... and exposure lock lets you use partial metering.. sometimes that is better than the evaluative method used in most modes..

(for evaluative metering. try to have the red dots point to as many differently lit areas as possible.. ie: one on the ski, one on the dark trees..... if the red dots are only on the light objects, for example... the pic will be underexposed.. the camera like to use as many points as possible...

(i believe).. anyway.. check the canon learning section on the rebel... there are about 16 lessons by now....
