I scanned it and saved it so i wouldn't have to type it.

Unfortunately you can't write directly to the president or to anyone important for that matter, all mail is redirected to some customer service rep. that spits out the same cr@p to everyone. This is what i expected. I will try writing to someone lower on the totem pole, but i think my only hope is the hackers come up with a solution to my recomposing problem using the 400 f5.6L. I wonder if canon will every release a new digital rebel with more features since it's not intended for advanced funtionality, i'm guessing they will lower the prices of the rebel and 10d to compete more closely with the d70 or maybe we will see a different camera. I'm guessing i will have to get a 10d after this camera.

This is outrageous. It wasn't designed to have advanced functionality? maybe they should advertise that too.

Do we need to send Mr Uchida a few more letters?

they will never understand that ai focus does NOT work. why they don,t get it ? their dumb or what?

If they would only provide a way to disable it totaly in creative mode instead of imposing a stupid design that does not work.

Good thing there is Wasia and eventualy we'll probably have a hack for this.

sooo...you should shoot your birds in landscape mode or what?

Someone forgot to tell Wasia that the Drep is incapable of advanced functionality...

Some day I will be worthy of my electronic equipment... of course by then it will be obsolete, and therefore time to upgrade...

Well it seems to me like this is a personalized letter. It's not a form letter.

You're probably right - I don't think it makes much sense to have more than 3 base DSLR's on the market right now, and if they did, for sure the next model would not be another Rebel but more something along the lines of the EOS 3 in the film lineup (in between the 10D and the 1D).

Their film Rebel lineup makes no sense at all to me right now and I think it mainly exists to cash out as much as possible on some existing European designs. I can't see having more than two even in film. In digital, where SLR's are still pretty expensive, I think more than one would just split the market and probably make both unprofitable.

I think lowering the prices so the 10D is comparable in price to the D70, with the Rebel dropping another $100 or so would probably be their likely next move.

he will not recieve them. I'm going to try one of the other managers listed on their website. I just want to be able to recompose my shot in peace.

I could change the aperture and use exposure comp. Sometimes i can recompose without Ai servo kicking in, but if i hold the shutter long enough it will eventually switch to servo mode, I prefocused on this little green herons head and recomposed while waiting for him to do his mating call. I probably had to recompose this shot three times because Ai servo eventually refocused on the birds body or the stick.

In all fairness, could there be any other answer. Would the CEO have said it any differently. This forum has cried aloud about the features the Rebel D is lacking from the first day, when someone talked of the inconvenience of AlFocus and its automatic switching to AlServo which has never proved to be a problem to most of us. It has been all down hill from there with FEC issues paramont along with the AlServo issues and the never ending focusing issues that have supposedly plagued EOS digitals from the start.

The bottom line has always been that Canon offers a camera that has all the features the complainers about the Rebel D have been moaning about. Why in the world haven't the complainers simply purchased the 10D like the Canon rep just suggested.

Personally, I bought the 10D when it came out and have used it little since I bought the Rebel D primarily because the Rebel D is so much lighter and more convenient for me. It does everything I have done with the 10D and just as well.

What we have had from the beginning on this forum is a lot of folks who should have purchased the 10D but didn't and have been second guessing the Rebel D ever since. I find all that tiring and it has chased me away from this forum more often than not.

That's rediculous. Canon has four EOS digitals. They are a progressive graduation from an inexpensive entry level one to the high end 1Ds. If you were advertising your low end, entry level camera would you suggest it is a poor camera in comparison to your best model, of course not. You would price it at the entry point and let folks look at the list of features and decide for themselves. If you didn't do that and purchased the wrong camera, it seems to me the responsibility lies with you not Canon.

Reasoning like that is what leads these threads to negative ends. It is damaging to the forum as a whole, in my mind.

I would you photoshop to black out your name and home address!!!

it's the internet.. you don't want to start puting your home adress out there :)

Wouldnt it have been better, in this case, to use manual focus? As the bird isnt moving closer or further away, manual would have kept it in focus. You could even have AFed initially, then switched to manual.

But Dave - it's not asking much to expect Canon lenses to work properly with a Canon camera body. If you can't use FTM focus in any of the "grown-up" modes that's a fair criticism, and not something that would have been obvious pre-purchase necessarily. All it would take would be a menu option to turn OFF the AI focus if desired. No added functionality, just less automation.

This thread only refers to AI focus, not FEC. It's fine if AI Focus has never been a problem to you, but I wonder why you are so dismissive of people who bought a 300D in good faith, believed what the manual says about focus lock with a half press. then found when they bought a longer lens that the camera keeps kicking into servo.
The bottom line has always been that Canon offers a camera that has
all the features the complainers about the Rebel D have been

Dave, you might be in a position in which the price difference is just small change. Here in Australia, the 10D costs around A$1000 more than the 300D, then you have to buy a wide angle lens as well. I spent almost A$3000 on the camera and a 75 - 300 IS and thought long and hard before doing that. A 10D was and is out of the question. I love everything else about the 300D but I feel cheated over the AI focus issue.

Yes, certainly the price difference is a legitimate deal breaker. The Rebel D is a wonderful deal in comparison to the 10D especially when you consider the price of a comparable lens to the kit lens.

AlFocus has definitely not been a problem for me with the ten different lenses I have used on the Rebel D, including the 75-300 IS lens. You are certainly correct that the camera does kick into AlServo with that lens much more easily than it does the kit lens, but it has never been a problem for me. That definitely doesn't suggest that it isn't for you, though.

I would, if I were you, put your Rebel D on ebay now while it will bring a maximum price and go for a 10D. You have accumulated lenses and perhaps the price difference won't be as great. I think the 10D would work better for you, probably.

I think we have to accept the givens of any new camera. They are not something that are going to be changed by the factory no matter what our clammorings are. That the Rebel D has short comings is obvious. The 10D surely does too as does every other camera you are likely to own. You just have to decide if it will work for you. If it won't you have to move on. This ongoing indictment of Canon for issues they aren't going to consider issues is nothing but a negative gloom that does none of us any benefit.

Good point, but Canon is not going to do it. The Rebel D has been out for seven months. These cameras have a 12 month run at best. If Canon were going to address any of these things they would have by now. They just aren't going to do anything about it. To allow these concerns to dominate the Rebel D forum for month on end is quite simply detrimental to the forums.

I think you have missed something here.

Notice that the Customer Service Representative copied to Uchida. Why do you think he did that? My guess is that Uchida actually did receive it and then passed it to this guy to officially repsond and copy him with the response. Else it is a matter of policy to copy Uchida, and I believe it is a matter of personal pride and dedication that Uchida probably actually does read what is sent to him. You wouldn't expect such a senior officer at Canon to spend his time responding to letters of complaints all day, would you?

The same thing happened to me when I worked at Canon's Printer Division and someone sent a letter to the head honcho, Hiro Yamamoto (if I remember right) at the time who I worked under. I was directed to write a letter back, an apology really, to the satisfaction of Yamamoto. It had his attention and it was my job on the line to respond correctly. It was taken very seriously.

I do not think Uchida missed this at all.
I scanned it and saved it so i wouldn't have to type it.
