I'm getting close to getting the 300D. So far with my rebel 2000 I only used the automatic geen rectangle setting so obnviously I am a real amateur though I get goof reesults. Mostly I want to take pictures of my 10 yr. old son, soccer, school, scouts stuff. I have an old Tamron 28-200 which I don't know if it would work on the DRebel so what other reasonable lens should I plan on getting that is versatile and can handle the shots I am likely to take? Thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully respond.

Your Tamron 28-200 from your Rebel 2000 should work fine on the DRebel, so you may want to try that first before spending money on something else. For a budget zoom, many people like either the Sigma 70-300 APO II or the Canon EF75-300. The more money you have, the more lens you get - Canon EF100-300 USM, Canon EF70-200 F4L, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Canon EF70-200 F2.8, Canon EF100-400 USM IS, etc.

Here's one from the Canon EF75-300 F4-5.6 III (non-USM):

is the kit (18-50) and the 55-200 II. The 55-200 II runs about 200 US dollars. Thus you'll have two super light weight decent lens that translates into 28-320mm.

Though the Tamron you have should be fine, it may not focus as fast as the 55-200 II (micro usm), but I don't know for sure..

How have you found the 300D as far as how quick it focuses for soccer? Do you have to prefocus or can you put it in a continuous focus mode and will it then properly track the players?

Thanks

what is the continuous focus mode? Sport? I usually don't want the sport mode because I can't change settings to match the Seattle weather. Seems like all my shots come out WAY too dark in sport mode.
Thanks Katz

Nice picture. I bought the 75-300 II USM from someone and I'm dying for it to get here. I bought it for the sole purpose of getting closer to the action than I can with the kit lens. It's nice to see an example like this to show me it will take nice pictures even though I didn't get the IS.
