A few new G5 shots

just 'accidently' produced these beautiful seagulls...

I like the second pic best. Your seagulls have the same lazy hovering attitude as ours. Is that pic cropped or just resized or both? Would be nice if you could show a un-shrunk crop of that original.
Am still familiarizing myself with the camera, just fooling around
with settings, got these shots at local park:

Thanks QRTAN I don't have much to photograph around here but I keep looking.
  1. 1 represents 1/3 of the original image area, I liked the young man playing the guitar in the bkgrnd so I included that, and the couple on the bench too. Shot is too dark however, need to lighten somewhat.
  2. 2 is 1/4 of the original image area, there were other gulls in the shot but they are in awkward poses / state of flight. This was the only composition that made sense to me.
  3. 3 is 1/3 of the orig image area, subj is far left of center. for most of these, I just set the zoom to 4x and panned with the birds, in this case they were swooping fast since there was little wind, so I had to pan fast. N.I. on this one, to smooth it even more. All at ISO50.
  4. 4 bird with bread crust in beak - what a catch - 1/4 of the original image. All these were reduced for upload.
  5. 5 I have since lightened it and increased the contrast a bit for a newer version, this is about 2/3 of the original image, center of shot.
Here is #2 original (downsized for upload):

Here is one more shot (maybe a runner-up) I thought was kind of neat -- it was at least 2 stops underexposed and represents 1/4 of the original image area . . .

Tricity park right? I recognized it immediately. I owned a G5 too and have been here many times with my kids, but never got a good shot of a seagull. Once in a while you'll find white pelicans.

hey forbes!

really cool! i suppose they are all taken at maximum zoom? may i ask how you focused? did you use manual focus or was it fast enough to catch the action, or did you prefocus somehow? i always had problems with focusing on moving objects at longest tele.

I'm also intrigued. Looks like a fast shutter to freeze the wings, implying shutter priority, or perhaps a custom mode at hyperfocal, avoiding focus lag?

Impressive, but I still like my A80

Made a lot of sense. Clearly there is a lot of cropping margin with these 5MP (AND 4 MP) cams.

A good runner-up, exposure time long enough to blur the wing tips = life in the pic: frozen movement wouldn'thave been as nice, IMO that is.

practice) I'd have set it at the "street setting" of around 15 ft or so but without thinking it through I just had it on Infinity for all shots. So the focus is off, some more than others. I used max optical zoom on most or all of them (4x). Funny, the buggers move so fast, I wasn't always watching the viewer but instead just "hip-shooting" and as a result, sometimes missed the things altogether.

Thanks for the response, Oluv! Don F.

it is the little gem. Used it today for some job related photos.

Regarding the settings, I did use a fast shutter (shutter proirity 1/1000 sec) and continuous mode too. There's a button for that, one press and it's continuous. I was hyperfocal but at just a notch under inf rather than 15 ft, a mistake probably. Am surprised I could not completely freeze the wings at 1/1000. Seems like my focal plane shutter would have, but that doesn't make sense, 1/1000th is 1/1000th, regardless of camera, right?

True but I am in need of some better subjects. I live 25 mi. from the sea, could be worse I guess. Endless opportunities at the beach cities but I hate the traffic.

You make a good point, it is pretty amazing, as the crop seems very detailed (the original crop in my PC is better, at 180 dpi not 72). Right now, I just don't see the need to have 8Mp. I suppose Marco will teach us otherwise, but I am ok playing around with 4 or 5mp.

Thanks, hadn't thought of that, therefore I can't exactly take credit. I mentioned earlier that I am sort of surprised that 1/1000 sec does not completely stop the wings. Aperture was f5 , may have been f 5 on all of these.

QRTAN, Used my A80 gem today, some work-related photos. Much fun! D
