It was a pre-production unit that a Canon Rep had at a Denis Reggie seminar. I took several pictures with my own flash card but promised not to post any. I was very impressed with this camera. I was a little concerned about the weight but it is very nicely balanced. I tried to throw off the metering by taking several tough shots with sun in the background but the histograms were almost perfect. Pictures were sharp and accepted sharpening very well. Tried it with the flash and the ettl II is everything people say it is. Rep expects them by the end of this week.

Was any reason given for not wanting you show your pictures?

Are you a "Pitman" as in Pitman Photo Supply? ;-)

Yeah really! The camera is supposed to be out within a week and people STILL can't show pics.

What a joke!

I can understand if it is a pre-production camera. My concern is that the Canon rep still doesn't have a production camera. What's up with that?

Probably because it's sometimes the worst of the worst pictures that end up being posted, and all of a sudden people think the camera isn't worth more than a lump of clay. Obviously, a rep isn't going to know what kind of person he's handing the camera off to. Better he say, "No you can't post images" rather than "No you can't take any pictures at all."

Canon doesn't know who is buying the camera either though, what kinds of pictures will be taken, etc... and I assume we are allowed to post pics from cameras we purchase?

I think we have all seen the worst from this camera anyways. People are still going to buy it. Canon reads these forums. They know what is going on. It will make no difference what images are posted at this point. Everyone has made up their mind! Just my thoughts of course.

The difference is then you have counter comparisons from numerous sources and numerous photographers. The market mass then speaks. At that point, a few bad samples is not taken to be indicative of all. Pre-release, it tends to be a chorus of one.

When I saw the 1D Mark II here in Paris, I asked them if I could
put my CF card in it, and they said "sure". Nothing beyond that.
No request that I not post images on the Internet, nothing. And
I posted this:

Others had the same experience as mine.

You don't understand -- this camera is SO special that we will all be asked to sign NDA's to not post or exhibit our pictures. They are for private and personal enjoyment only.

The Canon Rep asked me not to put them on the web because it was a pre-production model. There are some production models in the field and Denis Reggie has two. He loves this camera and had nothing but compliments for it. He used to shoot with a 1D for his "reactive" photos and a 1DS for group photos. He now uses the Mark II for everything. He hasn't shot film in three years.

There have been some good pictures posted on the internet. Here is the one that convinced me:

Jeff,

Lucky you, If I'd a chance to try out the Mark II, I'd might have sold my D100 and switched. Instead, I stayed with Nikon and got the D2H. I still need/would like a higher megapixal. Will see what the resolution is on the D2X and if it aint more then 11 Mp, will seriously contemplate switch. Right now I am saving up as D1S or the D2x will cost me somewhere about $5k to $6k. Am hoping Nikon's new D2 will push the D1S to even lower price. think it is already down to about $6,200 at BHphotovideo.

John

P.S. Your full name wouldn't happen to be Jeffrey Pittman, 1980's graduate of the University at Manoa? Had a great friend by that name that I have not seen/talked to in years.

Ah... Portugal. The Algarve was one of my favorite visits. Beautiful beaches I seem to remember. (Has been 15 years since I was there though) :)
