Today I received my 3rd Canon G1 from the local dealer. The first had a power supply damage after one day use, the second a defect CCD showing some disturbing bright green pixels on every pic.

Am I the only one to whom such a mess happens or don't they check their products before delivering?

If the camera would work as it should, it would be a excellent one, by the way.

My second one is in the mail right now. There's been several discussions on this forum. Some seem to get the right one at first. Others like us are not so lucky. Agree there's a quality control issue with the G1. Besides a few quirks, like the aperture f8 oddity, and a few features missing- I have focus problems and it would be nice if there was a sharpening assist like the 990, the G1 is a fine camera I am happy with and going to stick with it... as long as I can get one with a clean CCD. Does make you wonder why there's so many returns on the camera, though?

Yes I too am on my third G1 and this one seems to be fine except the first shot sometimes gives a half silent shutter sound. Hope your third turns out good, its a great camera once you have one that works.

My 3rd G1 is in transit and will be here tomorrow via the UPS truck. This one was supposed to be checked carefully and I am hoping (not necessarily expecting, though) that it will have a clean CCD.

I am still committed to the G1 and proof of that is the 420EX and spare battery that I still have in my possesion. I am also ordering the lensmate kit as recommended in this forum.

I've been reading this forum since early Jan and we are not alone in this predicament.

Hi Emil,

Hang in there. I, too, am now on my third camera.

The first had a bad pixel in the LCD. The second had two hot pixels in the CCD and it died completely after ten days.

The third is fine in every way, no bad pixels, no known issues.

I, like you, was willing to give Canon one more chance. Mainly because through the years I have owned (and still do own) several EOS bodies, lenses, flash, etc. with which I have had no problems at all. Maybe this bit of bad luck is payback.

I also wanted a Canon digital because I can use my flash and filters, etc. I am pleased with the overall image quality produced by the G1 and the extra features not found in many other brand names.

As long as this one keeps performing, I will be happy until I move up to the D30.

Hope your third will be lucky for you, too! Happy shooting.

The lack of a shutter sound on the first pic has been discussed here before, mine does it too. Its an oddity certainly not worth worrying about as it doesn't affect the picture.

I presume all of the 3.34 mp CCDs are made by Sony? Perhaps Canon is assuming Sony is QC ing them or doesnt have a good, quick way of doing that itself. All of the manufactures seem to be in the same boat here.

Hopefully this will be the one Emil.

If you do experience some type of a new problem I would highly recommend using another vendor.
Don't give up, it's worth it.

i, also, amazingly, am on my 3rd g1. had i seen this thread before arranging yet another exchange, i might not have gotten another...

for the record, the 1st problem was a bad pixel on the ccd, the 2nd was a crash while changing modes, from which the camera never recovered (i tried everything).

that being said, the 3rd arrived yesterday, and i'm happy with it so far. no obvious problems yet, but i'm crossing my fingers (which really stinks, considering the price). =)

good luck!

The whole industry is less than stellar. I have had mulitple returns on Collpix 880s, OLY 3030s, and 950s.

Emil,

For what it is worth, I am on my second Olympus E-10, my first(1yr. +)Nikon D-1, and my second G-1, (since it first came out) I think it is safe to say that NONE of the camera companies involved in the current "digital camera wars" is quit up to snuff on the quality control end of the game. If the G-1 is the camera that suits your needs, then, keep going, you have the bad luck of being able to get the bad ones. It will change. ALL of the companies involved are trying to rush product to the public, and the bad ones slip thru. By the way, it took Nikon almost a year to make a fix for all of the problems on the D-1 !. Good luck
Mike

We are all bemoaning the lack of decent QC in the entire digicam business. The fundamental problem is that the industry is growing very rapidly with major improvements in every years generation of cameras. Thus right now the over-riding emphasis from the buying public is on new and better features. After all wouldn't you jump for joy (and check your bank account) for enhanced perfrormance like a 6+ mp, 16bit sensor with an IS 30-200mm lens that weighed less than 12 oz and cost less than $1000? At the current rate of progress that may not be far off. As the performance and design of the cameras starts to plateau (this may take a handful of years or more) I believe that the public will start to emphasize cost/value and quality much more. When that happens, the digicam manufactures will have designs that sell effectively for more than 10 months and will be able to establish a better QC system.

Most of us have 35mm cameras that work well after 10-20+ years, demonstrating a robust and refined engineering with qualtiy build. But outside of electonic improvements of AF and exposure, 35mm design hasn't made dramatic leaps in a very long time. The design has stabilized with refinements being incremental, thus quality became important.

We, the purchasers, have to give the corporations a larger incentive to be more conscientious of digicam quality, and they will do it. Corporations have no human conscience; their management is hired (and fired!) only to maximize profit. Right now it is more profitable to sell digicams based upon features, not quality. It is up to us to make digicam QC more profitable. Buying from reputable dealers and returning defective equipment is one financial incentive we should follow through on. I notice that many small companies survive on software improvements and accessories. They too should be supported with our business. Any other suggestions?
