Quick poll for Big Ed owners: Do you use the E1 hand strap with it? Always? Sometimes? Rarely? Do you ever put the neck strap back on the camera?

My Big Ed came yesterday and I instantly regretted not getting the hand strap. Ordered it this morning (p.s. shipping charges suck). I'm thinking that the grip and the hand strap will stay on the camera 24/7. How 'bout you?

I agree. I use both the neckstrap and handstrap at all times. I feel I have too much invested in the camera and lenses to take a chance of it falling. And too, I severely injured my left hand several years ago and I don't trust my ability to use it adiquately in an emergency situation....so I use both!

I keep an Op-Tech neckstrap and the E-1 strap on the camera. I use
both.

Joe, when mine arrived I fitted it straight away, then promptly took it off and threw it in the draw, not worth the plastic bag it comes in.

How come? After I screwed on Big Ed, I recognized my miss and fashioned a makeshift hand-strap. It felt perfect (OK, mildly uncomfortable given available materials, but very effective).

Why did it not work for you?

Thanks for your feedback.

Both stay on the camera all the time. I don't use a neck strap at all and hand carry the camera if its not in my bag. I even find that I can put on my flash bracket with the strap still in place, so the strap/big ed haven't been off my camera since I purchased them.

Don't feel bad, I ended up purchasing them separately also, yeah shipping charges can add up but you save so much shopping the web considering competitive pricing and possibly taxes your still ahead of the game. Just did it again and ordered the remote switch a couple days ago then today a teleconverter both from B&H, oh well #@ $!.
Hope you get it soon you'll love it.

Joe, the handstrap is threaded into a metal "friction clamp" ( made up technical term). This metal piece has an extra opening on it for another strap to loop through. This extra opening is for a neck strap. I also have both a neck strap and the hand strap. Make sure the neck strap has quick disconnect connectors on it like the op-tech.

I leave my grip on all the time. It is a PITA to thread the strap and is not worth the 5 minutes to take in on or off.

Another issue. The had strap gets in the way with many flash brackets that use the tripod socket. I just got a stroboframe quick flip bracket and think it best to remove the strap with it.

I do love the BG-ED3/E1 combo despite these little nits.

Joe,

You use the little metal clip that comes with the hand strap. Use it as a go-between to intigrate the handstrap and the neckstrap to the camera strap mount. Do a search here on this forum. some time back someome posted a link to a chart showing pictures of how to arrange the straps on the clip. I had already figured it out, a slightly different way, and my way works ok so I haven't yet changed it, but the way shown in the post is better.

I leave my hand strap on all the time, wouldn't leave home without it. I rarely use a neck strap. I did the same as you, as soon as I got Big Ed, I knew the hand strap was meant to be!

By the way, the instructions for attaching the hand strap are at the bottom of the sheet that comes with Big Ed. There are none in the package with the strap!

About those shipping charges, next time you need something small like that, just add another L lens to the order. That will make the shipping charges much more economical !! :O

Good shooting, Tom.

Ditto. I have given away three of them as I don't find them at all useful.

Handstrap stays on 24/7. I have an Op/Tech neck strap with quick disconnects...it is on the camera when I am outdoors shooting, but I remove it when inside and just use the E1. The E1 takes a little getting use to and resizing until you can comfortably use the controls on top of the 10D.

Joe, the strap was too flimsy for my liking and didn't give a great deal of support.

It may work better for you, hope it does.
