I was wondering if it's possible to apply actions to only certain parts of the picture. I tried the quick mask, then ran the action, but it converts the whole pic.

any help would be appreciated. Don't know if it can be done or not, but I'd love to figure it out..

Thanks,

You can select the part of the image you want, past it into a new layer and do the action on that layer

I can't totally figure it out either: however, one method for me has worked SOMETIMES. I isolate the area that I want to put the action on (there are various ways to do this-extract, lasso, magic wand, etc).-then put this area on a new layer. Then I move this layer to a new document, then run the action on this new document. Then I put it back to the original document.

However, this doesn't always work; esp. when the action changes the boundries of the applied area.

Matt,

Not sure if this is the best way at all, but it can be done this way. Take the selected area, and copy and paste it, or just MOVE it over onto a new transparent file. Apply your action to it, then move it back to the original.

Again, there might be an easier way, but if so, it slips my mind right now.

Figured there would be some way to use the art history brush to revert the pic, but I can't seem to use that either..
thanks for the quick replies..

...this is why you pay the big bucks for a program like photoshop. Here's how it's done. Select the area you want the action to run on, using the lasso or marquee tools. You should feather the selection, but you'll have to determine what amount, suggest large 30 to 70 px. The go to Layer> new> layer via copy. At this point you will have a new layer with only what you have selected and then run your action with that layer being active.

Try it with and without. Depends on the action you are running on the selected portion.
