Dimage 5

My Dimage 5 won't allow me to use the M setting after dialing it up on the PASM dial. The P, A & S settings seem to work OK but the M shows up red in the LCD monitor and doesn't seem to function as I turn the black control dial (in other words the image in the LCD doesn't go from light to dark as I turn the control dial; it does when I'm in the S or A mode). It had been working fine before. I suppose I may have inadvertently punched in a setting which conflicts with the M setting but I can't find anything in the manual to enlighten me. So, as usual I turn to where I usually find my answers.

Of course my first reaction is to say 'doesn't work anymore, time for a new camera' but you know how that goes.
Thanks for any help.

That's strange. I had a DiMage 5 till last week when I sold it to my friend and now I have an A2.
Questions:
1 - When was the last time you used the camera in Manual Mode?
2 - Since owning the camera have you done the firmware upgrade?
If not here is the link

3 - What ISO setting are you using?

Jerry,

I also own a D5 and such thing has never happened to me ever since I got the camera in April, 2002 (two years ago).

If nothing else helps, try to "re-boot" your camera...here's how to do:

And finally, please advise your result...may also be of help to other D5 users in the future...;-)

Cheers, Feri

Thanks for your reply. Believe me I'd love to buy aan A2 but I'm not sure I've gotten all I can out of the Dimage 5 features. At any rate not enough to justify the expense of another toy. To answer your questions though.

1. I had been using the Manual Mode with no problem and all of a sudden it didn't work.

2. I'm not sure if I've downloaded the most recent firmware; I don't remember doing so.

3. I have fiddled with ISO settings but mostly it's been set to Auto as it is now.
Someone on the newsgroup alt.minolta.support emailed me the following:

Effects Selector in the A/V position?

Try a full settings reset per the troubleshooting section.

I assume they mean Troubleshooting Section in the instruction manual but I'm not finding anything about that.

Thanks again,
Jer

Ferenc,

That worked!!! Paraphrasing the comments on the rebooting the memory settings must have gotten overloaded, corrupted, whatever it is. The rebooting process seemed to work.

Thank you so very much. I find these forums invaluable and helpful, and usually very friendly.
Thanks again to you and Digital Angel.

I'm not sure about the Dimage 5, but my 7i displays the M as red and doesn't change the brightness of the display when I am in flash compensation mode.

This mode is intended for use with studio flash, and displays the viewfinder at a constant brightness level.

(to get out of it, I have to hold down the function dial button and push the i+ button - the function dial is the dial with PASM on it)

Sounds good, Feri,

I looked at some of yuor pics on your website and they are very nice. Are they all with the Dimage5 and do you use maual settings?

Hi Aaron,

Since you mention the flash I have a vague recollection of maybe messing with the flash and perhaps did something to conflict the settings. At any rate Feri's reboot fix worked but if it happens again I might try yours.
Thanks for the advice.

Yes, the 'Reboot' works well and fixes many problems (including some that you would not expect it to fix, like focusing problems), but it also resets all settings to default, including memories.

I can't beleive ALL of you missed this part in the manual!!! I own a D7i and found this after reading through the 2nd time. I missed it in the first time.

Anyways, here is the explanation: when you use a flash, the EVF/LCD won't show the actual exposure (the brightness) of the picture you are about to take. It always shows a picture amplified to optimum brightness. This amplification you can turn on even if you don't use the flash. You have to push the "Function Control dial button" (the button in the center of the dial that on the upper lefthand side of the camera), and the i+ button (at the center of the EVF/LCD switch dial) at the same time.

This will turn the M red, warning you that you are seeing an amplified picture, and your exposure will (or may) be different from what you see on the screen.

Look through again the manual to find it.

As I said, I have a D7i, and I didn't know that the D5 has the same function, but it looks like it.

So, when you rebooted or reset your setting, most likely this went back to "normal". There you go, your best bet (sometimes) is the manual.

Have fun,

ASAS

Hi Jerry again,

Thanks for your compliments on my website, I've done a lot of work to get those pics up on the site! ;-)

As regards your question on settings of cam: I usually use aperture priority set to f5.6 (so called "sweet point" of the lens of D5) to keep everything near and far sharp...coz I shoot a lot, so even I use the same settings for night shots, unless otherwise I wanna do something else.

Moreover, I set: Contrast to -3 ( to avoid burn out, as far as possible), Color to +3 (to keep color dynamic range at max), Sharpness: hard+ (to get the best sharpness)...

Finally, if I still need, I do post-processing of my shots.

How to you put your settings on your D5?

Cheers, Feri

Hi Feri,

I'm not sophisticated at this as yet. Mostly I have left everything default except I have been using the M control and just dialing in the kind of lighting I thought I'd like in a shot. I'm just a step up from the P (auto point and shoot setting) I suppose. My pics are so so but I'm sure I'm missing out on what evne the D5 can do. I can tell that by looking at just a few of your pics. It's always been a bit difficult for me to keep all the photography techniques straight.

Anyway perhaps I'll try the things you do and see how future pics come out. I appreciate all the knowledge to be gained from guys like you. I find digital photography a lot of fun and I'm sure over time the techniques will start to make more sense.

Best regards,
Jerl

As I said, I have a D7i, and I didn't know that the D5 has the same
function, but it looks like it.
This was introduced with D7 1.22 upgrade.

I don't recall it being mentioned at all with the D5 but it is quite
possible that the feature was introduced into D5 firmware for
compatibilty with the PCT100?

So you may well be right!
