Columbia's Last Mission Photograph

The photo is a fake - a composite of satellite shots and computer enhanced stuff from satellites.

Pretty sad to associate it with columbia.

don't spread misinformation!

Must you get so upset can't you just point it out without getting so rude?

Jan and Jimmie, what are you talking about? Jdprev didn't say anything rude; he was just pointing out a fake and saying that it was a shameful thing to associate a hoax with a tragic mission. He wasn't accusing Jimmie of creating the picture; he was just saying don't continue to pass it on since it's a hoax.

That'a a lovely picture, which is why it has been sitting in my hard disk for quite a while I couldn't throw it away. I just looked up the date, September 2002.

As for the "last mission" stuff... Is this somebody's idea of an April's fool joke?

Steve when someone tells me not to spread misinformation I feel like it's being rude. I have or had no idea what the deal on it was as someone just sent it to me via e-mail and I thought it was a neat photo. I figured it was a composite of many photos but have no way of knowing what mission or sattelite or when it was taken. He could have pointed out that it was a fake or not taken by the shuttle without telling me not to spread misinformation? How would I know when it was taken or by whom other than what it said with the photo?

Jimmie, according to the date and time of the messages on the onlinephotographers forum, you knew that it wasn't a Columbia shuttle photo BEFORE you posted the link here. (Or at least you knew that it was being labeled a fake, so its origin was in doubt). Yet you still posted the link here with the title "Columbia's Last Mission Photograph". If that's not spreading misinformation, I don't know what is.

My mother was constantly passing on e-mail chains, and 99% of them were fake. She won't take the time to check them out herself, but I've at least trained her to send them to just me first (takes me less than 5 minutes to investigate online and see if it's a hoax or real). That way, I can break a small part of the chain at least. Some of them are harmless, but a lot of them are mean-spirited or could cost someone money. At the very least, they waste bandwidth and, as Jdprev pointed out, spread misinformation.

No insult intended, Jimmie (and Jan), but I still feel jumping on Jdprev was unwarranted.

Hello from a long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm not sure what the timestamps show, but I'm the one who first pointed out on onlinephotographers that the image is a fake, and I found his post there from here, so Jimmie didn't intentionally lead anyone to misinformation, and he didn't know it was a fake when he posted the link here. As I said on the other forum, this is one of those things that has been forwarded from inbox to inbox until it is taken as truth by many. Jimmy wasn't trying to trick anyone, he was just sharing an image he thought was pretty neat. And even if it has picked up some added sentimental baggage along the way, it's still an interesting image.

Then I take back my first paragraph - the timestamps must be from different time zones. Sorry, Jimmie, seems you didn't know after all. (But I still don't think Jdprev did anything wrong). :-)
