Panasonic Bob about the DMC-FZ3 if you are around

Bob - Will Pansonic offer an fz3 firmware upgrade for my fz1? Will
there be an optional built-in tripod?

Yes, but it will only be offered in Japan and Panasonic USA does not recommend installing it.

Mr Real Panasonic Bob

As usual you are being evasive, can you be specific and answer the
important questions ?
Does it come in silver & black ?
No. It only comes in bronz/copper color to make sure it does not match any aftermarket accessories.
When can we expect it to be available & what is the approximate
price (to the nearest million $ will do).
I cannot tell you the release date or an agent from the parent company will throw an FZ3 at my head, which will most assuredly cause my death. The estimated MSRP is $50,000, but keep in mind that it's also a laser weapon and portable DVD player.
Oh I nearly forgot, will you be sending one to Phil for testing? :-)
Phil's website is in the UK and they always get our products last (unless we decide the USA will get them last or never get them at all). So, no, we will not be sending one to Phil. Okay, the real reason is that it weighs so much, it's too expensive to ship. We'd have to buy it a seat on the Concord, which doesn't fly anymore, so...no. He doesn't get one.

The REAL Panasonic Bob

Dear Real Panasonic Bob:

My sources tell me that the 12MP is achieved with a 4MP CCD. Each
sensor is equipped with a tiny rotating wheel of 3 color[RGB]
filters. The camera takes three successive pictures, one of each
color and then the software combines it all into a photoshop file
suitable for cropping and printing as a 4X6.
That's not entirely correct. Each CCD is suspended via magnetic coil, which vibrates really fast during OIS warmup, resulting in the four separate images being merged at a nuclear level. FYI, the FZ3 comes with a radiation suit as well, but only in Japan.
Do you know how it compares with the Minolta A1?
Until the A1 can be used for self-defense and mobile video entertainment, it doesn't compare at all. The A1 is a lightweight piece of garbage -- remember, if it's heavy then it's expensive. That's the FZ3 all the way!
Will it accept the T-Con 17 without an adapter?
Yes, it will launch a TCON-17 approximately 330 yards at 150 yards per second. We recommend at least eye protection and a helmet for your subject.
When will it become available in Ethiopia?
Definitely before the USA.
Regards,
Michel

Before this goes too much further in jest, I want to formally and publicly apologize to the actual REAL Panasonic Bob (which isn't me) for being the brunt of my jests in this thread. As with all jests and humorous jabs, things are exagerated quite a bit in order to enhance the humor of it. I don't want Bob to think I actually feel that way or that Panasonic is necessarily treating their customers the way I've described. I appreciate him hanging with us, regardless of his information limitations at times.

He hasn't emailed me or anything...yet. I just wanted to make sure that no one's feelings were hurt in this. It truly is just intended to be a jest.

No need to apologize for the funniest thread to come along in ages, on April Fool's Day! I forgot to ask you what Panasonic's firmware upgrade policy will be on the new machine?

This had me totally fooled until I read the bit about a focus assist lamp. On a Panasonic? Unthinkable. Nice try anyway.
Alright, darn it! The gig is up! I'm really Panasonic Bob, which
is why "he" and I have had such semi-heated threads at times. I
was trying to throw you all off track.

The FZ3 is already in my office now. However, you're all somewhat
misinformed. It's a 12MP camera, and therefore (like the rest of
the market) it only has a 3x zoom. It's also as big as an average
human head and weighs 42lbs without the battery (which is actually
a car battery, so it does add a little bit more weight). We had to
use a car battery because we had to install a self-contained air
conditioning/cooling unit due to the heat build-up. The LCD on it
is 7" widescreen and can view DVD movies via the built-in DVD-RW
drive, which is new to this product since it's a joint venture
between Panasonic and Sony in order to continue the Mavica line.
It has a proprietary flash shoe that will only fit one type of
flash (costs $1,200 and is only available in Japan), and despite
having only a 3x zoom, the lens accepts a new standard in filter
sizes: 106.294mm (also only available in Japan). It has laser
hologram focus assist allowing you to take pictures in the complete
darkness of a black hole in space, and with the higher battery
power, the laser doubles as a self-defence weapon. The tripod
mount is centered under the lens this time and away from the
battery trunk door, but the camera is too heavy for any tripod
anyway (future tripods will only be available in Japan). There
will also be a Leica version of the camera that will cost 22x as
much, and will only be available in Europe, but all accessories for
the Leica model will still only be available in Japan.

I hope this answers all of your questions.

PS - Please don't believe any of the above -- I'm just kidding.
Thought I might need to mention that since I know that English is
not always the primary language of some of the members here!

Wow, that's true -- it is April Fools Day! What timing...purely accidental, I assure you.

Now this would've been a better Fools joke: Remember when were all listing version of firmware and our serial numbers? I wonder how many people have their FZ1's with them all the time? I was thnking this because it would've been pretty funny to privately email each person who posted their serial number, telling them that you found their FZ1 by the side of the road in (whatever city their profile says), and you got Panasonic to trace ownership by serial number.

Imagine the number of calls to home (or even people going back home at lunch) to check on their FZ1!

Do you REALLY have to ask?

Response: All firmware upgrades for the FZ3 are currently only available in Japan.

Haha.
