Make em shine! Custom Curves for D70..

Glad it came in handy. Damn this digital shooting is fun. Shoot all
day for no cost.

Tell me that guy standing up on his bike is still alive. Holy moly.

He is pretty amazing on that bike, I must say it was very hard choosing photo's to put up as I took close to 500 over the weekend. The couple who rode up to the island with me on the weekend (pictured) were very understanding I think, considering I was taking photo's of everything around me, Nothing was safe from my shutter moving or otherwise.

I noticed that custom curves can be applied in two places in Nikon Capture 4.1- in the Curves palette and in the LCH Editor. I was wondering which setting is more appropriate for applying custom curves.

Thanks
Hi all,

I have had a great response to my gallery of D70 pics at pbase.
Thank you everyone for your kind words, like many here, I am very
enthusiastic about photography again, and the D70 looks like a real
winner and a great tool. Don't worry about the FUD and the trolls,
look at the results and make up your own mind.

I have had many requests for my custom curve that I use to brighten
the conservative (slightly dark in mid-tones) exposure of the D70.

You can make it by adding in the following two points to the curve:
99-120 and 141-171 or by downloading it from:

http://members.iinet.net.au/~dfx/DavidFmidtoneBoostA.ntc

For a great explanation of what a custom curve is, try this site:

http://fotogenetic.dearingfilm.com/custom_tone_curves.html

Also search the forum for his recent posts:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/postersprofile.asp?poster=hjimixixhzie

I recommend you also try Neils and Fotogenetics curves for the D100
as well, to see what works best for you. They can be downloaded
from:

http://fotogenetic.dearingfilm.com/downloads.html
http://www.planetneil.com/nikon/d100-customcurves.html

Ok, now you have the curves… You will need the 30 day trial of
Nikon Capture 4.1 if you do not already have it, to install and use
a custom curve. That means getting the 4.0 trial, and updating it
to 4.1 so it will recognise the D70.
http://www.nikon-asia.com/downloads.php

Once installed, plug in your camera, run Nikon Capture Control, go
to the Menu called Camera, and select Edit Camera Curves. Load up
the curve there. The sample image box is not a good guide to what
it will make the image look like – it does not display a sample NEF
correctly.

The curve, when selected in the camera menu – Green – Optimise
Image – Custom – Tone Comp – Custom – will affect every picture you
take in P, A, S and M modes. It will be a permanent change to JPGs,
but if you are shooting NEF/RAW you can turn it off after you
shoot. Playing in Nikon Capture Editor later, in the advanced RAW
dialog, will show you the difference with and without the curve
applied. If you are shooting JPEG, it is much better to apply the
curve in the camera before conversion to 8 bit and compression,
than afterwards in Photoshop etc.

Have fun, and shoot great pictures.

So, hookup the cam, load the curve in capture 4.1, then change Tone Comp to custom and I'm done? How can I tell if the curved has been loaded into my cam?

Woosa,

If you view your image in Nikon Capture, you will see the image's settings info.

If you see "User-Defined Custom Curve" in the Tone Comp. category, your custom curve was applied to the image.

Woosa,

I forgot to add that in Nikon Capture you should click on Menu > Shooting Info to see the image data.

Hi,

Just a quick question, can you load custom curves without Nikon Capture?

BTW, thanks David for the info!

Wes.

Don't think so. Just get capture 4.0, upgrade to 4.1. Install nikon view 6.2.1 too. Get ready your serial number too, the Nikon support sites will ask you for it before you can download it. Then you can use it on trial for 30 days.

Bump this excellent thread up for all to see.. :)

Would a custom ICC profile achieve the same thing as your curves? Possibly more accurately?
I will try and create one when I have time at the weekend.
My curve is based on making things look better on a calibrated
monitor - that is why I encourage folks to try a few to see what
works for them. There are few absolutes in photography...

People seem to like my curves though ;)

18% gray is not the value to which meters are calibrated. They are
much closer to 12.5% (14% for Minolta).

If measurement is taken from the gray card, it would be 1/2 eV
underexposed.

If you are going to calibrate, shouldn't you calibrate both printer and monitor? Also, my 20" Dell LCD came with an ICC Profile and I run Adobe Gamma, should I need to calibrate my monitor or is it already done for me?

JP
I take your point about things getting very ugly very quickly if
you try to define absolute, perfect and exact... I won't be getting
into a discussion on what 18% is or is not.
My point is that people trying to use metering through ExpoDisk or
off the gray card should dial +1/2eV normally (see, for example,
the leaflet attached to recent editions of Kodak Gray Card). Having
histogram spike shifted to the left when metering from the gray
card and taking an image of the same card is normal.
My curve is based on making things look better on a calibrated
monitor - that is why I encourage folks to try a few to see what
works for them. There are few absolutes in photography...
I have my reservations about the calibrated monitors. For me the
proof is how the image looks on a normal, uncalibrated monitor, on
which most of people are viewing pictures. Well-balanced image
would withstand. The other important thing (and most important for
me) is how the image prints on well-calibrated printer.

I didn't think I could be happier with my D-70, but I was wrong. The custom curves I downloaded from fotogenics are truly awesome. Thank you all for posting these incredible resources free of charge.

The images are much better with the Provia 3.2 curve (as opposed to the default curve). The ability to create a custom curve at all is fantastic, and I see so many possibilities for curves to suit many situations.

My first post!

After downloading the white wedding custom curve, I've not been able to get to anything underneath the "Image Processing" tab of the camera control part of Nikon Capture. I can edit Custom curve settings from the other menu and the histogram comes up. But when the settings are saved to a new file, the software says the settings were sent to the camera but can't used until the the "tone comp" box is set to "Custom Colors".

I think there defiinitely is a bug in the software. I may wind up reloading all of it just to reset my camera.
Regards to eveyone!
Jake
Things to try:
  • Take a shot using a D100 curve like white wedding
  • make your own curve.
Why can I edit my results but not you?!

Problem is B&H refused to ship Nikon Gear overseas when I tried to
order.
Software? I just took delivery of Nikon Capture with a bunch of other things last week. You might have been unlucky... did they give reason?

Henry from B+H often posts here and is very helpful, maybe he can give us the official word.

I noticed that custom curves can be applied in two places in Nikon
Capture 4.1- in the Curves palette and in the LCH Editor. I was
wondering which setting is more appropriate for applying custom
curves.
You can only do custom curves in one place AFAIK...

This is where it gets messy. LCH curves are different to Curves, and both are different to Custom Tone Curves. (the first two live inside Capture, Custom Curves live in the camera)

If you try to load and save then you will see that they are different formats.

Because of the way Nikon wrote this software, the curves are applied at different stages and do different things. A Curve that looks the same shape as a custom curve will look very different. (darnit)

I cannot see how you can shoot a NEF with say, a White wedding curve, and then later in NC4.1 apply a Provia curve to it. You only have the option of using the custom curve that was uploaded to the camera at the time of shooting, or no custom curve at all. (in which case you can do a standard Curves on it for just that image)

Ugh, explaining this in text is hard!
