Hello All

After having the oppertunity to take photos of the advertising groups for NASCAR that do the Army ad campains, I am attempting to gain access to a area for photos at the Coca-Cola 600. Not in the bag yet, but they are trying. Question is, has anybody shot these types of photos with a 10-D and would you like to provide any suggestions.

I haven't shot Nascar but did get a chance to shoot some ALS at Laguna Seca for a weekend with photo clearence (get to go on the other side of the fence and get CLOSE.)

I actually found the the 10D's AF is not an issue for motorsports outdoors. My issue was the shutter lag and 3 fps. You can get around it and once you get used to it, I think you can make do. I also got to shoot with a 1D that day and I can tell you the shutter lag and 8 fps make a big difference when you need to squeeze off a sequnce.

Overall though, I think the 10D is fine for motorsports but not so hot for indoor sports like b-ball.

I suggest you shoot a lot of frames and try some different types of shots with long glass. Go for different perspectives. You probably know that you should shoot at low shutter speeds and pan to get some motion.

Not so much a photography tip, but a legal tip. If you plan to sell pics make sure you have the OK from NASCAR and are clear on their terms. If you try selling unlicensed photo's, NASCAR will hunt you down and kill you! (OK, maybe not kill you but generally they will make life somewhat unpleasant for you) I know for a fact that even the Indianapolis Motor Speedway cannot sell Brickyard 400 photos if there is only one car in the picture!

Hello Nitecops

Good notes thank you very much. I am still perfecting panning. I haven't had the chance to shoot any indoor sports, but I know the camera has a little difficulties with the indoor photos. thnaks for you post

Hello iMac

I didn't realize that there was such a problem selling photos if you were given press pass credentials. But, have not ever tried before, and really wasn't thinking about it this time. Not saying I wouldn't sell a photo if I had a great one.

So there is more legality selling a photo if only one auto is in it? Interesting. Well, if I get the press pass, I will have to seek out more assistance then...lol

I don't know - I'm just saying make sure you are clear on what the credentials entitle you to - NASCAR is VERY strict. I've been told they have people who's job is to seek out unlicensed NASCAR merchandise. Strictly speaking if you go to a race, purchasing the ticket enters you into an agreement that the sanctioning body owns the rights to any images you take! (or something to that effect).

It has to do with NASCAR protecting it's drivers rights to their own images and how they are used.
