I already have the 300D/Rebel kit lens, the 50mm F1.8 , the 75-300mm F4-F5.6 IS USM and the Sigma 24-135mm F2.8-F4.5

So should I buy a L lens?
I'm interested in the 70-200mm F2.8 or the Sigma 70-200mm F2.8 APO...
I already have so many lenses...

what would you do?

thanx!

It really depends on what you are trying to do and how much money you have to spend. The 20-200mm 2.8L would have some overlap with the 75-300mm 4-5.6. But I'm sure you would like it nonetheless. You might also consider the L primes (the 35mm 1.4L or the 85mm 1.2L).

Not unless you know something specifically that you want to do that the current lens don't do or do poorly.

When that occurs, then buy the lens that is appropriate.

For example, perhaps the 75-300 focuses to slowly for some application you have (like birds in flight). Then perhaps you decide to replace it with a 400 f/5.6 that gives you better reach for birds and focuses faster.

Sure. I don't have any yet, but my wish list would include:

16-35mm 2.8L
70mm-200 2.8L
35mm 1.4L
85mm 1.2L
500mm f4L
maybe the 14mm 2.8L

Now if we can arrange a little loan....

unless you need a smaller, lighter, longer lens for bright days outside when you can stop it down enough for it to look decent, i highly doubt you will ever use 75-300IS after getting the 70-200L. the difference in image quality is so profound you'll be utterly repulsed by the thought of the cheaper lens.

Unless the lenses you already have aren’t doing something you want to do I would not buy an L lens. I think a good time to buy an L lens, or any additional lens for that matter, is when you are feeling limited by your existing equipment. Why is it that you want a 70-200mm f/2.8? If what you are thinking of would be difficult with your existing lenses and easy with the 70-200 then I think you should go for it.

If you are just looking for a lens that is sharp and has wider apertures check out the EF 85mm f/1.2L, EF 200mm f/1.8L, EF 300mm f/2.8L IS and EF 400mm f/2.8L IS. They are extremely sharp wide open.

are you saying that the lens i mentioned is not enough for car racing photography?

That the 70-200mm f/2.8L will be fine for car racing. This is from a person who rarely ever shoots car racing (I have only done it a couple of times and I found that I was getting decent results from teh slower 100-400mm IS)

go here for my car race picz http://takki.fotopic.net/c93641.html

i used the EF 75-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM (IS off) to capture these racing cars on a cloudy day. Ofcourse i sharpened/added contrast the picz!

so i would like a L lens.

or would you recommend me a L lens with something 400mm?

Takki,

If you're going to shoot carraces then why not considering the 70-200 f/4 L? This lens is much cheaper and half the weight of the f/2.8.

Yes, L is sharp, fast, mean and lean but I also have a 90-300 4.5-5.6 and does a good job as wel.

Get more lenses? :) I have three now and I want the 28-135 IS USM and the 50 f/1.8.

Your pics look great, I would be very satisfied with them if I were you. Did you find you were usually close enough wiht 300mm or 200mm? The EF 100-400 IS is a great lens if you feel like you need more range. Of course if 200mm is getting you close enough then the 70-200 is an awesome lens too.

Greg

If you a re not sure to buy a lens, then you probably dont need one-so dont do it.

As soon as you need one you should know it and do not need to ask.
